Unlock Bootloader, Root Moto G Running on Lollipop

Motorola recently pushed the Lollipop update to their 2014 Moto G 2 devices, and things didn’t really go as planned. From the stripped power menu to dual SIM data errors, there have been a number of issues that have caused outrage among Moto G loyalists.

The best way out of such a situation is to install a better custom ROM or go back to the original Kitkat 4.4. But all of those require the Bootloader to be unlocked. So let’s first see how to unlock the Bootloader on the device and then we will look at installing a custom ROM.

Warning: This process will completely erase your device, including the internal SD card. You should back up your entire device before proceeding. Additionally, once your bootloader is unlocked, your device’s warranty will no longer be in effect. Continue at your own discretion.

Necessary setting

  • Install the Motorola USB drivers for your device if you don’t already have them installed. You can click the link to get the driver installer file for Moto G 2014 version.
  • Download and install minimal ADB and Fastboot files on your computer. Make sure you install it on your desktop for easier access.
  • Make sure the device is charged at least 60-70% before you continue.
  • Remove the external SD card, if present, from the device and remove it. Once the bootloader is unlocked at the end, you can use the card again.

Step 2: Now connect your phone to the computer and wait for the necessary drivers to be installed.

Install the driver

Step 3: Now open the folder where you installed the ADB and Fastboot files, hold the shift key and right click. In the context menu, click the option Open Command Prompt here.

Step 4: Type the command fastboot oem get_unlock_data. Once that’s done, you’ll get a string of codes. Copy and paste the code into notepad without any extra spaces or spaces. The entire code must be in a single line.

Getunlockdata

Step 5: Now open the Motorola website and register yourself. Need to get the device’s unlock key on your email. When you sign up, scroll to the bottom of the page, enter your unlock data and ask for the unlock code.

Download unlock code

Step 6: If your device can be unlocked, you will receive an email with the unlock code within minutes. Copy the unlock code, open the command prompt and type the command fastboot oem unlock .

You will receive a warning on your device about unlocking the bootloader. Confirm the action to unlock the bootloader successfully. The phone will reboot with everything wiped clean. You can now insert an external SD card and restore your device.

Want to lock it up? If you want to lock the bootloader, you can type the command fastboot oem reboot in Fastboot mode. But to make things clear, manually locking the device will void the warranty.

Install TWRP recovery and root the device

If you are looking to root your device or install a custom ROM, you must install a custom recovery like Clockwork or TWRP. I like the latter because of its interface. Download and save the TWRP flash file in the fastboot folder and boot the Moto G in Fastboot mode (hold volume down + power button). Plug the device into the computer and wait for it to be detected. Now open command prompt in Fastboot ADB folder and execute command TWRP fastboot flash recovery.

Reboot the device and copy the SuperSu zip file to the internal SD card. Open Bootloader mode and navigate to recovery. This time you will be taken to the TWRP recovery main screen. Finally, flash supersu zip and your device will have root access.
