How to Get Back the Product Keys You Lost In a Computer Crash

A product key is like a bank account. They should be kept in a safe place. A Windows crash is miserable enough if you accidentally lose your product key. The product key is printed on the packaging containing your installation disc. The first advice is to keep them safe and backed up. Knowing how to retrieve them if you’re lazy is second.

ProduKey is one of those neat little system tools that you won’t notice unless the disaster of losing your product key hits you. If you want to reinstall Microsoft Office (Microsoft Office 2003, Microsoft Office 2007), Windows (Including Windows 7 and Windows Vista), Exchange Server or SQL Server on your computer, this little utility comes to the rescue by helping to retrieve the original product keys from your current Windows OS.

The download package is a small 47 KB ZIP file. Extract it to a folder. ProduKey is a standalone application and you can even run it from your Flash drive. Clicking on the EXE file launches the application and it immediately retrieves all available product keys from installed programs on your Windows system.

ProduKey can also recover a product key from a damaged copy of a Windows installation. The following screen appears when you select File > Select Source. The utility can locate and recover the product keys of connected computers, do so from an external drive, recover the product key from all connected computers in the network, and can also restore remotely if specified. The network feature makes it a powerful little backup app for troubleshooting jobs.

You can save the selected product keys in a text file and also create an HTML file. Do you keep backups of your product key? If not, then do you think ProduKey is a good fallback option?
