Safari’s Private Browsing tabs provide the perfect means to surf online without worrying about your browsing activity being recorded locally. Not only that, private browsing tabs also help prevent website trackers. But what if you find this important functionality missing?
There’s a simple reason that’s happening—restrictions on web content. When enabled, website restrictions completely block anonymous surfing. And luckily, that also means that re-enabling Private Browsing is pretty easy if you’re the one who imposed the restrictions in the first place.
Note: If you’re a family organizer participating in Family Sharing, you can use or remove web content restrictions for participating members.
Remove Restrictions
There are many different situations where web content restrictions can be useful. For example, handing over your device to someone else — possibly a minor — for a while. That can be a solid reason if you want to record their browsing activity in detail. And for a good reason, that also blocks the ability to use Private Browsing tabs in Safari.
Therefore, you need to turn off those restrictions if you want to surf anonymously.
Did you impose web content restrictions before upgrading to iOS 12? If so, you won’t find them inside the Settings app (under General) on your iPhone or iPad. Apple has completely integrated them in the new Screen Time feature. Let’s see how to get around those limitations.
Step 1: Start by opening the Settings app.
Step 2: Tap Screen Time. You should now see an option labeled Content and Privacy Restrictions — tap it.
Step 3: Insert your Screen Time passcode (formerly known as Restricted password) when prompted to continue.
Note:
Step 3: Tap the option labeled Content Restriction.
Step 4: Tap Web Content.
Step 5: Tap Unlimited Access. You have now lifted the restriction.
Step 6: Open Safari, then tap the tab switcher. You can now see the Private option, which means you should have no trouble opening the Private Browsing tabs.
Forgot screen time password?
iOS 12’s Screen Time passcode is quite useful when it comes to preventing others from tampering with your device’s content restrictions. However, you may forget the password completely because you cannot use it often. If that’s the case, resetting the password won’t be a pleasant experience.
To remove the passcode, you need to restore your iOS device using a backup made before you set the Screen Time password. Otherwise, you will end up restoring the Screen Time passcode from a backup.

But things could get worse. If you can’t remember the last time you made a backup without a passcode or didn’t create a backup, you’re in trouble. You will need to restore your iPhone or iPad to factory settings. That means you will lose all data and settings on your device.
Only do a full restore if you have prior experience with the process. And before you continue, back up important items to iCloud. Alternatively, perform a backup using iTunes on your PC or Mac. And don’t forget to manually transfer photos and videos from your iOS device to your computer or cloud storage service.
If something goes wrong even after following the above suggestions, do share the error you are getting in the comments section below. We will try our best to help you with a solution.
Family organizer
As a Family Sharing plan organizer, you can use Screen Time’s remote management features to remove any unintentionally imposed restrictions right from your iPhone or iPad. self.
You can also remove restrictions on the kids included in your Family Sharing plan. However, only do it if you think they don’t need close supervision.
Warning:
Step 1: On the Screen Time settings screen, tap a family member’s name in the Family section.
Step 2: You will now see a separate Screen Time settings panel for the selected family member. By now, you must know how to define the Restrict Content and Privacy option. Tap it, then Content Restrictions, Web Content, and finally Unlimited Access to remove the restrictions.
The family member will then be able to surf anonymously in Safari. Of course, you can re-impose the restrictions at any time by following the steps above to select the Limit Adult Content option instead.
Note:
Some privacy Sure feels good
You should have no trouble using the Private tabs to surf anonymously after turning off the restrictions. If you share your device with someone else, constantly messing around with web content restrictions might not be a good idea. In that case, use the new Shortcuts app added in iOS 12 to create a quick shortcut to turn restrictions on or off.
Instead, consider using a privacy-focused browser like Firefox Focus. This lightweight browser is meant for content blocking and tracking protection. You can even use Focus as a content blocker for Safari on iPhone or iPad.
