iTunes is a seriously cumbersome application. It’s slow, clunky, and performs poorly on Windows 10. And the fact that it relies on many related apps to work properly only makes the experience worse. Then the infamous ‘Windows Install Package’ error can take a toll on your day.
Normally, the ‘Windows Install Package’ error appears whenever you try to update or reinstall iTunes. It’s a known issue for several years and occurs due to a conflict with Apple’s Software Update utility that was originally installed with iTunes.
Thankfully, the solutions listed below should help you fix this error forever. So let’s get started.
Apple software update repair
Improperly configured version of Apple Software Update is the most likely culprit for the ‘Windows Installation Package’ error. Thus the obvious way to patch things involves fixing it. Luckily, a short visit to the Apps & Features panel will help you do just that.
Step 1: Open the Start menu, type Apps & featuresthen click open.
Step 2: On the list of apps that appear, click Apple Software Update, and then click Modify.
Step 3: On the pop-up window, click Repair, then follow the rest of the onscreen instructions to repair the Apple Software Update.
Step 4: Click Finish when prompted to complete Apple Software Update repair.
Step 5: Download iTunes from Apple’s official website.
Step 6: Run the downloaded file, then click Repair when prompted. That will reinstall and update iTunes to the latest version and you probably won’t get the ‘Windows installation package’ error.

Use the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter
For those cases where Apple Software Update doesn’t seem to work, you need to use the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter. This utility detects and fixes persistent problems with installed applications. In this case, you need to configure it to remove Apple Software Updates. You can then reinstall the latest version of iTunes without any hassle afterwards.
Step 1: Download the Microsoft Programs Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter, then run the downloaded file.
Step 2: Click Next, then wait a while while the tool scans for potential problems on your PC.
Step 3: Select Uninstall. Again, wait a while while the tool scans for registry-related problems.
Step 4: Select Apple Software Update in the list of applications, then click Next.
Step 5: Click Yes, try to uninstall when prompted.
Step 6: Click Close to exit the Microsoft Programs Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter.
Trying to reinstall the latest version of iTunes should not cause problems from now on. If you get this error again, run the Microsoft Program Uninstall and Install Troubleshooter, uninstall iTunes with Apple Software Updates, and then try again.
Use a Third-Party Removal Tool
Rarely, the Microsoft Installer and Installer Troubleshooter may not resolve the ‘Windows Installation Package’ error. In such cases, you need to download and install a free third-party uninstaller such as Revo Uninstaller, Absolute Uninstaller or CCleaner to remove iTunes and all related apps.
These tools are also capable of completely removing leftover files and registry keys, thus providing a clean means to reinstall iTunes later. Choose Revo Uninstaller and see it in action.
Note:
Step 1: Download and install the free version of Revo Uninstaller.
Step 2: Right-click Apple Software Update, then click Uninstall.
Note:
Step 3: Revo Uninstaller will automatically create a System Restore point and prompt you to delete iTunes. Click Yes to confirm.
Step 4: After deleting iTunes, select the radio button next to Advanced, then Scan for leftovers.
Step 5: Delete all detected registry entries then click Next.
Step 6: Delete all leftover folders related to iTunes, then click Finish.
Step 7: Repeat the process for other iTunes related software on your system in the following order:
- Update Apple software
- Apple Mobile Device Support
- congratulations
- 32-bit Apple App Support
- 64-bit Apple App Support
Then, restart your PC and install the latest version of iTunes. There is very little chance that you will get the ‘Windows Install Package’ error again.
Time to relax, but…
Hopefully the above solutions worked and you have successfully reinstalled or updated iTunes. However, you can also consider switching to the Windows Store version of iTunes and avoid the same headaches in the future.
All in all, it’s less cumbersome than its desktop counterpart, feels a bit sluggish in performance, and automatically updates alongside other Windows Store apps. Sounds good, doesn’t it?
Migrating to the Store version of iTunes is also easy as your existing backups and music library are automatically imported from the current installation. Unless you’re not using Windows 10, there’s no reason you shouldn’t switch.
