In the past, when you received photos in Gmail, it was easy to transfer them to Google Photos. One will save them to Google Drive and they will show up in Google Photos when they are linked. Recently, however, Google has disliked Google Photos and Drive. That also affects how people transfer photos from email to Google Photos.
If you received a lot of images on Gmail that you wanted to appear in your Google Photos, things are different now. While there is no direct way to transfer them to Google Photos, various alternatives exist.
Check out how to move photos from email, especially from Gmail, to Google Photos.
How to transfer photos from email to Google Photos on the web
There are two ways to do that. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Let’s check them out.
1. Move Photos to Google Photos using Google Drive
The first method has the help of Google Drive using the built-in feature in Google Photos. You must first upload photos to Drive from Gmail, then add them to Google Photos using the native Drive option.
We know Google Photos allows us to upload unlimited photos, as long as the upload size is set to high quality in the Google Photos settings. So check the quality before adding photos from Drive. Once they’re added, delete the photos from Drive to free up Google storage.
Here are the detailed steps:
Note: This method only works with Gmail.
Step 1: Open the email that you want to transfer photos to Google Photos.
Step 2: Click the Save to Drive icon next to the photos. All photos will be automatically added to the root folder of Google Drive. If you only want to move the selected photos, click the Drive icon on the photos themselves.
Note: At this point, photos will take up storage space on Google Drive.
Step 3: Open photos.google.com and click Upload.
Step 4: Click on Google Drive from the menu.
Step 5: Select photos to upload to Google Photos. The photos will appear on the date they were taken and not at the top.
Step 6: Open drive.google.com and delete photos if you want to free up storage space on Google. Deleting them on Drive won’t delete them from Google Photos.
2. Move Photos to Google Photos by Downloading
The limitation of the above method is that it only works with Gmail. For other emails, including Gmail, you can use the normal process where you have to download all the photos on your PC and then add them to Google Photos manually.
Here are the detailed steps:
Step 1: Open the email containing the photo.
Step 2: Click Download all attachments to download all photos. A ZIP file will be downloaded on your PC. You can even download individual photos by clicking the download icon.
Note: Extract the ZIP file to add photos to Google Photos.
Step 3: Open photos.google.com. Click Upload and select Computer. Navigate to the extracted or downloaded photo you want to add.

Step 3: Select Google Photos. Then, select a Google account and tap Upload.
2. Add photos by downloading
If you have a lot of photos and your email client or website doesn’t support sharing all photos to Google Photos, you can download each photo to your phone and then upload them together.
If backup for Google Photos is enabled for the Downloads folder on your phone, downloading them will automatically add them to Google Photos. However, if you don’t use Google Photos’ backup feature on your phone, you’ll have to add them manually.
Here are the steps:
Step 1: Open the email. Look for the download button of the photos. You may have to open the photo and tap the three-dot icon.
Step 2: Once all the photos are downloaded, open the gallery app on your phone. Select a photo and tap the share icon. Select Google Photos.
In case you use Google Photos as your gallery app, launch the Google Photos app. Tap Albums and navigate to the folder containing the downloaded images. Open photo. Swipe up and select Backup.
Upload Photos from Email to Google Photos on iPhone
Step 1: Launch the email client and go to the requested email.
Step 2: Open the photo and tap the download icon at the top.

Why use Google Photos instead of Google Drive
In case you’re wondering, is it better to just save photos on Google Drive? You can. However, as you know, photos saved in Google Drive count towards your Google storage quota. That is not the case with Google Photos if the photos are added with high quality. Also, it’s easier to view and share photos on Google Photos than in Drive. So it’s better to use Google Photos. We hope Google provides a native button in Gmail to add photos to Google Photos.
