So you’re trying to delete a photo from Google Photos, and instead of being deleted directly, you’ll see the Permanently Delete Item error. Of course, now one would want Google Photos to delete photos permanently without showing a pop-up message, but that’s not the case.
There is a reason why you are getting this error. In fact, the pop-up also mentions that the recycle bin on your device is full. Device trash? Yes, you read that right, but technically the pop-up is a bit confusing because it’s not the device recycle bin but the full Google Photos recycle bin.

Trash Google Photos
I’m sure you’re probably wondering by now what happens when you delete a photo in Google Photos? Well, similar to Windows, where deleted items are kept in the Recycle Bin, Google Photos doesn’t delete media permanently, instead it saves them to its own version of the trash called Trash.
Media is kept in the Trash for 60 days and then automatically deleted. However, sometimes we delete multiple photos at once, or newly deleted photos add to the existing Trash causing the Google Photos trash to fill up and as a result, you get the Permanently Delete Item error.
Basically, when the Photos Trash is full, the items are permanently deleted without putting them in the Trash first. This will eliminate the chance of photo recovery in case you delete the wrong photo.
Now that you know the reason behind the error, learn how to fix it.
Fix Google Photos Trash on your device is full of errors
To fix this error, all you need to do is empty the Google Photos Trash. Here are the steps to do so.
Step 1: Launch the Google Photos app on your device and tap the hamburger icon (three-bar icon) in the top left corner to open the navigation drawer.
Step 2: From the drawer, tap Trash.
Step 3: In the Trash, tap the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner and select Empty Trash. This will delete all photos in the bin and will delete your Trash.
In case you want to delete each photo individually, touch and hold the photos and press the Delete button at the bottom to delete them permanently.
Now if all goes well you should be able to delete the photo without error. However, if you’re still getting the error, try these fixes.
1. Clear cache and data
After you empty the Trash, try clearing the cache for the Google Photos app. Here’s how to do it.
Step 1: Open Device Settings and go to Apps/Application Manager/Apps and Notifications.
Step 2: Then, in all Apps, tap Photos. On the next screen, tap Archive.
Step 3: You will get two buttons: Clear cache and Clear memory/data. Press the Clear Cache button first and restart your device. Open the Google Photos app and try deleting the photo. If you don’t get the error, great!
However, if the error persists, tap Clear memory/data. This will delete all Google Photos settings and you will have to sign in to Google Photos again.

2. Uninstall updates
The Google Photos app cannot be completely removed from an Android device. You will have to uninstall the updates to restore it to the original version. This will also fix the problem.
To uninstall Google Photos updates, follow the steps:
Step 1: Open the Play Store on your device and search for Google Photos. Tap the app.
Step 2. On the Google Photos Play Store listing screen, you will find the Uninstall button. Tap it to remove the update.
Step 3: After removing the updates, the Open button will be replaced by the Update button. Tap it to update the app. Once the app is updated, try deleting the photo.
Bonus Tip: Recover Deleted Photos
Thanks to Google Photos Trash feature, you can recover deleted photos. If at any point you regret deleting a photo and it’s still in the Trash, use the Restore button to get it back.
Here’s how to do it.
Step 1: Open the Google Photos app and tap the hamburger icon in the top left corner. From the navigation pane, select Trash.
Step 2: Click on the Restore button present at the top. You will be asked to select the photos you want to restore. Select the photos by tapping them and then hit the Restore button at the bottom. This will restore them to their original location.
