When you’re trying to get directions on Google Maps or planning to check-in for a place on Foursquare, it can be frustrating that GPS takes a long time to lock in your location. While we always recommend using GPS on clear ground, how likely are you to check in to an outdoor restaurant? Little, right?
So today I’m going to talk about two ways to polish Android’s GPS to lock your location in significantly less time.
Using Assisted GPS (AGPS)
Assisted GPS, as the name suggests, is your GPS-assisted feature that locks your location on the fly. Assisted GPS uses nearby Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers to triangulate your location and thus augment your GPS.
To enable assisted GPS on Android, open Settings—>Location and tick the option Using a wireless network or WOODoogle location services (may vary from device to device). After enabling this feature, your phone uses data from sources such as Wi-Fi and mobile networks to determine your approximate location.
Using GPS Fixes
A) GPS support
GPS Aids is a free Android app that makes your GPS more efficient. Essentially, the app enhances your GPS by using a more accurate time estimate from an NTP server near you. The app works for both rooted and non-rooted devices but rooted devices can download additional data to calibrate their GPS even better.
This application is very easy to use. Once you install, launch the app, select your phone model from the list and press the start button. That’s all, the app will do the rest automatically. It may ask you to give root access in the middle of the process, but even if you don’t have root access, it should work fine.
B) GPS Status & Toolbox
The GPS Status & Toolbox has a slightly bold look compared to GPS Aids, and in addition to fixing GPS, it also shows GPS sensor data, location and signal strength of geosynchronous satellites along with with compass operation.
One can correct the compass, accelerometer and AGPS data from the tools provided in the app.
