Apple makes it hard to find new and interesting apps on Apple TV. Unlike other platforms, the primary search method for Apple TV apps is on the Apple TV itself. However, there are ways to find hidden apps in the store.

See if iOS apps have an Apple TV option
You cannot use iTunes or any other App store to search for Apple TV apps directly. That doesn’t mean you can’t buy Apple TV apps on other platforms. Some apps work on both Apple TV and iOS. As of this writing, you cannot search for them.
Things you’ve purchased may work on Apple TV
Since new apps are always being ported to Apple TV, you may have free apps waiting for you. Once you’re in the Apple TV app store, go to Not available on this Apple TV. In that section, you can see a few apps that you didn’t purchase on Apple TV. You’ll know you bought them somewhere because they’ll have a cloud settings icon on the details screen.

Find Specify Apple TV in the iOS App Store
As of this writing (I hope this changes), you cannot search for the Apple TV app. Apple gives us a glimmer of hope in the iOS app store. Apps with Apple TV partners are marked Yes in the Apple TV field below the details for any app. In this example, I chose Pandora. That doesn’t mean you can’t find them after updating the App Store. With that in mind, Apple will logically add search capabilities.
Check out some of the rankings for the top apps
In the Apple TV app store, Apple lists the top free and paid apps for popular categories. That list is currently only searchable on Apple TV. Third parties have access to that list and may be able to provide you with additional information
My favorite site to search for apps is Slide To Play. They list top apps in over 40 categories. That’s a much larger list than Apple’s eight listings on the TV’s app store. Slide To Play’s list also tells you whether an app is Universal or not. That tells you if you buy it on Apple TV, you can use it on iOS devices.

Another site I use to find Apps is a little site by Jonas Boserup. It doesn’t have a name, but it does list the top free, paid, and top-grossing apps in the Apple TV store. The advantage of this site is that it mirrors content from the Apple TV store without the need for an Apple TV. You can’t buy content there, but you do get a link to the developer’s page on iTunes.
Start searching instead of browsing
Browsing for apps in any store is an exciting opportunity to discover new content. This feature is not available on the Apple TV store. You can browse the top apps, but you’ll be missing out on some hidden gems. To find less popular apps, you need to search for specific terms. Suppose you want to learn yoga. If you browse the Apple TV store in the Health and Fitness section, you’ll find the most popular apps.

When you search for the term Yoga, you will find many more. Just because an app isn’t popular doesn’t mean it doesn’t meet your needs. If you only select the top search results, you will miss out. Take a few minutes and see what’s out there.
Ask Developers About Upcoming Apple TV Apps
Many iOS developers are currently writing programs for Apple TV. Since it’s hard to find an app in the store when you don’t know the app’s name, ask your favorite developer. They’ll tell you the names of the cool apps they’re working on. Even better, they may let you try the app for free. If they don’t have apps, your input will let them know that they should consider writing more apps for Apple TV.
