How To Find, Delete the Personal Data Google Has on You

Google’s motto is “do no evil”. That was probably written when Google was a tiny startup and all it wanted to do was index all the pages on the Internet. Now it wants to map every corner of the world, build self-driving cars and do many other crazy things. All of this costs money, and if you know, Google doesn’t really demand money from consumers.

Of course, there is no such thing as a free lunch. So you pay with information. Your own personal information is the cost of the free service.

If you’re not willing to pay that price, Google offers options to delete some of your data, and in some places, you can opt out of tracking altogether. As you would expect, these options are not advertised correctly.

Today we’re going to take a look at all the ways Google collects your personal data and how you can delete it.

1. Clear Location History

Google actually tracks everywhere you go, when you use Google Maps for navigation and when you’re not. This happens thanks to Android and iOS apps. And in Android there is also no way to completely disable GPS. So go to this page and scroll through all the information that Google has about you. And then click Clear all history button.

Just clearing your browser history won’t help. Visit this link to see all the stuff you’ve ever searched for on Google. Click Setting icon then select Delete items and delete your history from the previous hour or from the “early time”.

3. Opt out of Google Analytics

Website owners use Google Analytics to track people who visit their websites. Although personal information is not disclosed, you may wish to opt out of Google Analytics by going here.

4. Opt-out of Interest-Based Advertising

Your personal data is ultimately sold to advertisers. Google still makes most of its revenue from advertising. If you do not want your data to be used to display tailored ads, visit this page, scroll down Opt out of installation and choose Opt out of interest-based advertising on Google or Opt-out of Interest-Based Google Ads on the Web.

Please note that opting out of interest-based advertising will not completely disable Google advertising. They will not be creepy ads based on your personal information.

5. Control the app with your Google data

Lots of websites and apps let you sign in with your Google Account. You may have forgotten those apps but in a folder somewhere with your name and email address, in an unnecessary place. Go to this URL and see all the permissions you have granted to your account.

Google allows you to export all the data it has about you. Bookmarks, history, devices, apps, videos, photos, all. Go to this URL and customize the data you want to retrieve and the preferred format.

Too late to destroy your life on Google? Should you do it at all?

It’s probably too late for me. I’m too dependent on Google and its services, and not giving Google access to my personal information means I won’t get the most out of Google’s services. But I can certainly control other apps with my Google account data, and can also delete some data from time to time for privacy, if any. How about you?
