When you travel, you must have come across people from different backgrounds, cultures and speaking foreign languages. It’s not easy to pick up a new language every time you take a trip, but there are ways you can get help when you really need it. Thanks to the Google Assistant, you can enable Interpreter mode to translate different languages on the go.
It’s hard to find someone every time you need to translate something or turn a few pages in a dictionary to find the meaning of a word or phrase you read on a manual or menu. Thankfully, you can use your smartphone or tablet and ask the Google Assistant to help you translate by turning on Translator mode.

What is Translator mode in Google Assistant
Translator mode is a feature in the Google Assistant that translates conversations in real time. It works in 44 languages and is invoked by saying commands like “Ok Google, help me speak Arabic”.
When enabled, the Assistant can translate and read your speech aloud, and on the screen you can see the Smart Reply feature that allows you to reply without speaking, which speeds up conversations story.
Smart devices like Google Home speakers or smart displays got Interpreter mode in February 2019 when the feature launched and provide real-time translations in different languages.
The main challenge with using it on smart devices is that they lack the mobile element, so it is not possible to carry them with you wherever you go to translate conversations in a foreign language.
Smartphone users can also enjoy Google Assistant’s real-time translation of chats. This way, they never have to use hand gestures again. Just enable this feature and you can chat back and forth with other people speaking foreign languages.
This also means travelers can reach out to the Assistant anytime they need help researching local restaurant recommendations or checking in for a flight. It’s also a great tool to have alongside the rest of your travel kit.
What you can do in Interpreter Mode
In Interpreter mode, you can translate 44 different foreign languages using the Google Assistant, whether you’re using an Android smartphone or an iPhone if you have the Google Assistant app.
There are different ways to communicate, depending on your situation. For example, you can choose a language to speak or type with the keyboard if you are in a quiet environment.
You don’t have to tell Google the language you’re speaking as it can automatically figure it out, but it should be a supported language. Since an update in August 2019, this app has been bilingual, which is the same technology used with the Interpreter Mode feature.
To start using Interpreter mode, say “OK, Google, help me speak German” and start speaking. You’ll see the words appear on your device’s screen as you speak, and Google will translate when you stop speaking and play the word aloud to your recipients.
You can then tap the microphone button to translate again while someone else is speaking, and you can see smart replies show up on the screen to give you quick feedback after each translation.
Interpreter mode is available on all Google Home speakers, smart displays, mobile phones and tablets, smartwatches, and some Google Assistant built-in speakers.
How to enable Interpreter Mode in Google Assistant
It’s easy to use Translator mode in Google Assistant. Just ask it to enable the feature and you’re done. It uses the microphone to listen to any speech nearby and then transcribe that language in real time. You will see a text translation in your desired language on the screen.
At the bottom of the screen, Assistant also offers a contextual text bubble, also known as Smart Reply, that relates to the translated text, making it easier for you to reply to the other person talking.
To get started, say — “Ok Google, help me speak Spanish” or “Ok Google, translate Arabic for me,” depending on the language you want. The translated conversation will appear and you can also hear it on your phone.
Make sure you select the language you want to use, and when you hear a tone, speak in whatever language you want. There’s no need to alternate between languages, but remember to pause between answers.
When you’re done, say a command like exit, stop, or exit to stop using Interpreter mode. For smart screen, swipe right to exit interpreter mode.
No more hand gestures
Interpreter mode is a great feature to have so you can chat with people who speak different languages and through your smartphone or tablet. Whether you’re preparing for a New Year’s trip or want to talk to family or friends who speak a language other than your own, language barriers won’t be an issue with Translator mode.
