Recently, I wanted to check the file size of an image on my iPhone. I’m an Android user now, and on an Android phone it’s simple to swipe up on a photo. Unfortunately, when I try to do the same thing on the iPhone, nothing shows up. I tried looking in the menus, but there is no option. Then how to check the size of a photo on iPad or iPhone? That is what we will tell you in this article.
For starters, it’s time to reveal the sad truth—there’s no native option to find the file size of photos on iPad or iPhone. However, there are many different alternatives, and I have compiled the best 4 in this post.
So check out different ways to see image sizes on iOS.
1. Using the Files app
You can take the help of the Files app to see the file size of a photo. However, unlike Android, images don’t automatically show up in the Files app. First, you need to save them from the Apple Photos app.
Here are the detailed steps:
Step 1: Open the photo in the Apple Photos app on your iPhone or iPad.
Step 2: Click the share icon at the bottom. Then scroll the sharing options to the left to reveal more options. Tap Save to file.
Step 3: The Files app will open. Navigate to the folder where you want to save it on your iPhone or in iCloud. Then tap More at the top.
Step 4: Open the Files app on your iPhone or iPad.
Step 5: Navigate to the folder where you downloaded the image in step 3. You will find the file size mentioned near the filename.
Pro tip:
2. Use Apple’s Shortcuts App
In the above method, you need to download an image first. The process gets hectic if you have to check the dimensions for many images. Another way is to use Apple’s Shortcuts app. To do that, you need to install the Shortcuts app on your iPhone. In case it is not installed on your phone, download it from the link below.
Once installed, you need to create a shortcut for the file size and run it whenever you want to see the image size.
Here are the detailed steps:
Step 1: Launch the Shortcuts app on your iPhone or iPad.
Step 2: Click Create shortcut.
Step 3: Using the search bar, find Get Details of Files. Touch it.
Step 4: Tap Select below Get file details. Select File Size.
Step 5: Again, using the search bar, find Show notifications. Touch it.
Step 6: Then tap on the area that says Hello World and you will see File Details at the bottom. Click it to add it. Click Done.
Step 7: You will be taken to the main screen of the application, where you will see the newly created shortcut. Tap the three-dot icon on the shortcut.
Step 8: Inside the shortcut, tap the on/off icon at the top. Then enable Show in Share Sheet and tap Done. Tap Name to name your shortcut. Again, press Done on the screen that opens to save the changes.
Step 9: Launch the Apple Photos app and open a photo of the size you want to know.
Step 10: Click the share icon. Then tap on Shortcuts accessible by scrolling the icons at the bottom.
Tips
Step 11: You will see the shortcuts available in the Shortcuts app. Tap the shortcut you created for the file size. A message will appear telling you the size of your photo file.
Repeat steps 9-11 whenever you want to know the image size. Steps 1-8 are performed only once.
3. Use a third-party gallery app
One of the best iOS gallery apps for photo size and resolution is Google Photos. All you need to do is swipe on the photo and the necessary details will be shown to you.
You can use it as an alternative iCloud Photos as it also works as a photo storage service. However, if you do not intend to do so, you should not enable the backup option in Google Photos. You can even move your entire library from iCloud to Google Photos. And if Google Photos doesn’t suit your taste, try other third-party gallery apps.
4. Use a third-party metadata app
In case you want to know Exif details about your photo such as aperture, camera manufacturer, brightness level, resolution etc, you need to download Exif viewer apps. You can try apps like Exif Metadata, ViewExif, and Photo Investigator. You can even edit the metadata associated with images using these apps.
Stop expecting
As an Android user, I’m surprised this tiny feature isn’t available in iOS. But that’s Apple. You should be ready to expect anything from its products. We hope they add the ability to view image sizes in future iOS builds.
Next up: Don’t like iCloud? You can disable it. But before you do that, know what happens when you turn off iCloud.
