Microsoft has been working on the Game Bar for a while now. Thankfully, it’s better than ever. With so many features packed into a full-screen console, the Game Bar only had one problem. The pop-up notifications kept popping up while I was playing the game. That is distracting and annoying. Gaming is more fun when you turn off the Game Bar’s pop-up notifications.
What are these announcements? They are tips and tricks on how to use the Game Bar and Game Mode that may help you. Well, it might help newbies who don’t know better, but how many times do you need to see the same tips? Luckily, there are ways to disable Game Bar pop-up notifications in Windows 10.
Let’s get started.
1. Disable Game Bar Notifications from Settings
There’s no need to open the game before you can make changes to the Game Bar settings. Just press the Windows key + G on your keyboard to open the Game Bar. In my case it worked on the desktop, but not when opening the browser. Maybe it’s because different apps are assigned different shortcuts.
Click the Settings icon in the upper toolbar here.
In the General tab, turn off Show tips when I start the game.
Can you see the Notifications tab there? I can’t, but it should be there if you haven’t upgraded to the latest version of Windows. Tap it to fine-tune the type of pop-up notifications you want to see or not.
You can choose to hide notifications while playing a game. That’s when they’re the most annoying. You can also choose to receive notifications only when you receive an invitation to a party or multiplayer match. Well, you don’t want to miss those events, do you? There are a few other options that are self-explanatory. Go through them all or you can also edit them as you see fit.
Interesting facts:
2. What happened to the game mode notification
The problem is like this. Microsoft doesn’t want you to turn off the Game Mode notification that usually pops up when you start a game. I do not know why. Perhaps if enough users complain, the company can listen.
Depending on the version of Windows you have installed, this may or may not work for you.
On your computer, press Windows key + I keyboard shortcut to open Settings and click Games.
Under Game Mode in the sidebar, can you see the option Get Game Mode Notifications? If so, turn it off. If not, you’re running the latest version of Windows. It should be directly below the Game Mode toggle.
If you want that option, you can restore your computer to an earlier point in time, but sooner or later, you’ll have to upgrade.
Interesting facts:
3. Tweak the registry
If the option is gone, there is an active registry tweak for some users. Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard to open the Run command and type regedit before pressing Enter.
See detailed directory structure below.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\GameBar
Right click anywhere on the right window pane to create a new 32-bit DWORD Value file and name it – TurnOffGameBarNotifications.
Double-click this file to open it. Enter 0 (zero) in the Value Data field to disable Game Bar notifications and 1 to enable it. Don’t touch anything else and click OK to save.
Now create another 32-bit DWORD Value file and name it ‘ShowGameModeNotifications’ and enter 0 as the value to disable Game Mode notifications. If at any time, things don’t work as intended or something is broken, come back here, delete the two DWORD files you created (one by one) and reboot to test again.
the game ends
Game Bar and Game Mode have come a long way. They are packed with features and work well. I don’t know why Microsoft would want to treat all gamers as if they were newbies. We know that stuff and even if we don’t, we can figure it out. Most of us just want to get on with our game. We don’t appreciate these notifications, especially when they’re set to repeat. Also, we love Microsoft and Xbox.
