Speechless when praising Canva. It’s a beautiful and useful tool for creating graphics for both personal and professional needs. While it has everything one would expect from social-friendly graphics creation tools, it lacks one feature.
We are talking about shape crops. Sometimes, instead of adding a simple square or rectangular image, we want it to be in a different shape. Let’s say you’re creating a card for your friends on Canva and you want to crop the image into a heart shape because Canva doesn’t provide a direct option for that. However, there is a workaround.
Whether it’s a heart, a circle, or any other shape, here you’ll learn how to crop images into shapes in Canva. Let’s start with the basic crop first.
Basic Cropping in Canva
This method is different for websites and mobile apps. We’ve covered both.
Crop on Canva . website
There are two ways to crop images. This method is different if you are replacing an existing image or adding a new image.
Crop a new image
When you add a new image to your template, click it once. Then click on the Crop option present at the top.
You will see that the image now has white corners. Use any angle, drag it inside the photo to crop to your need. Finally, click the Done option at the top.
Your image will be cropped. Interestingly, if you tap the Crop option again, you’ll also see the original photo. Canva saves the original image, and you can return to it at any time.
Replace an existing image
If you select an existing template and want to replace its image, Canva will automatically crop your image to fit the template design. However, if you are not satisfied with what Canva has chosen, just click the Crop option. Then drag the image to crop it as required. Press the Done button to save the changes.

On mobile apps, tap the image once and tap the crop icon at the top. Then, using pinch and zoom gestures, crop your image. Click the check mark icon to save the changes.
Cut into shape
For the sake of the tutorial, we’ll crop the image into a circle. The steps are the same for the other shapes.

Step 1: Open the template. Click Elements from the sidebar. Select the shape of your choice in Frames. Click All to see all available frames.
Step 2: The shape you choose will be added to your template. Now drag the image that you want to crop in a circle on top of this circle. You will see that it automatically occupies the circle.
Step 3: Use any of the four rounded corners to resize your circle.
Step 4: Double click on the circle to crop the image. You will get four white corners, use them to cut. Press the Done button to save the changes.
Similarly, you can choose many other shapes like hearts, ovals, polygons, numbers, alphabets, etc.
Mobile application
There are two methods to do it on mobile app (Android and iOS).
1. Use Search to Find Frames
Canva does not provide a suitable option for frameworks in mobile apps. You have other things like illustrations, text, images, and even shapes. But the shapes are different from the frame. So we will use a workaround.
Step 1: Open a blank or existing template.
Step 2: Click the add icon in the lower right corner.
Step 3: Tap on Illustration or Shape. You will get a search bar. Type frame and press enter.
Step 4: Now tap on the frame of your choice. It will be added to the template.
Step 5: Click the edit icon in the bottom panel. Then, tap on the Library option.
Step 6: Select the image that you want to crop according to the selected shape. It will be cut automatically according to the shape.
Step 7: To crop the photo or change the area displayed in the image, tap the frame. Click the edit icon. Tap the crop icon and, using pinch and zoom gestures, modify the visible area. Press the check mark icon to save the changes.
Step 8: Use the corners to adjust the size of the frame.
2. Use an existing template
If you use an existing template with a shape of your choice, you will also be able to crop the image. Here are the steps:
Step 1: On the main screen of the application, search for your desired shape. Let’s say a circle.
Step 2: Find a pattern that uses an image in a circle.

Step 3: Click on the circle. You will get three options in the bottom panel. Tap Gallery to add images from your mobile phone. Then tap on the image you want to crop. It will be cut in a circular shape.
Step 4: To modify the image, tap the crop icon. Then adjust the display area using pinch and zoom gestures. Click the check mark to save it.
The circle is the shape
You can use the crop circle feature to create profile pictures for different social networks. If you are already using an existing template, just delete all other elements except your shape. That way your template will only have shapes on a white background. You can also use other shapes for creative graphic design.
