The majority of movies and TV shows on Netflix are in English. The streaming service also carries some great movies and TV series in foreign languages. However, many users find it difficult to understand English on Netflix due to different expressions and pronunciation by artists from different regions. That’s where subtitles save the day. All is well until Netflix subtitles are missing or not working on your phone, tablet, laptop or desktop.
It can be very frustrating because you can’t keep watching that great show, movie, or documentary. Here are some easy and effective solutions that will help you get the subtitles back at the bottom of the screen.

1. Settings
Have you checked the settings of the content you are viewing? If not, start from there and check if the subtitle option is selected. Even if it is selected, deselect it and select it again. That could start everything. Play any video and tap Audio & Subtitles at the bottom of the screen.
You’ll see an option to turn it off or play in English or other available languages, if available.

2. Subtitle format

3. Different platforms, browsers
Are you watching Netflix on your smartphone? Perhaps your favorite Chrome browser? I recommend trying another platform like the Windows 10 or macOS app, or another browser like Firefox, Brave, or Opera.

4. Browser Extensions
There are two things that we will cover here, so don’t jump into this point. The first one is an incompatible add-on or extension. Open Netflix in Incognito mode and check if Netflix subtitles are missing. If not, you need to disable all extensions and then re-enable them one by one to find the culprit.
The second is a Chrome extension called NflxMultiSubs, which will add a second subtitle in the language of your choice. It supports Russian and Japanese, among others. It can fix the problem of missing subtitles and can also add a subtitle in your native language.
5. Log out, log in
This is one of those tricks that usually works with some services. So log out and back in again once. That can work to eliminate glitches or temporary errors that could be causing the missing subtitles.
6. Update, Reboot, Try Again

7. Clear cache and data files
Whether you’re using an app or a browser, clearing cache and temporary data can help resolve many errors, including Netflix subtitles missing or not working.
In Android, open Settings and go to the App List and find Netflix.
Tap Clear data at the bottom of the screen and select Clear all data here.
