How to Create Your Own Custom News Sections with Google News

Google News is a great way to stay up to date with the latest news stories relevant to you and the country you live in.

Google News articles are divided into categories, some created by Google employees and others provided by other users. You can use the built-in search function (duh, that’s Google) to find specific pieces of news that interest you. If you find a good category, you can preview it before adding it to your News front page.

But sometimes what appeals to us reflects an interest that is unique to us. There may not be a Customization section that focuses on strange encounters with aliens, and that may be the only thing you want to read. Wouldn’t it be great if you could create your own section on Google News to find and collect those articles for you?

Create your very own custom section

Step 1: Take your browser to the Google News homepage, specifically the Custom Sections folder. Note that the general categories are listed on the left hand side.

Step 2: Find the Add Item button (shown below) in the top right corner, below the search bar, and click it to continue your journey.

Step 3: Then you have to click on Create Custom Item to start the process of creating your own Custom News Item.

Step 4: This is where you get the meat of the tutorial.

You were asked to title your news item, I chose the Moon Landing because I was planning to create an entry containing only news stories about the moon landing.

You must then specify keywords to define your selected topic, which are listed in Search Terms and separated by commas. One cool feature is that an automatically updated list of articles appears on the right side of the creation window. With each new keyword, the list is updated to reflect the changes. It makes it a lot easier to ensure that you are achieving the desired effect.

You then have to select a language version and also have the option to specify a source location if you only want articles from a specific region.

Once you’ve made all your selections, tap Create.

Note: If you want to share your custom news section with others, check the box next to Publish this to a folder. Your news section will then be available to the public.

Step 5: Your new category will not appear on your Google News homepage. As you can see, my custom news section titled Moon Landing now appears in my list of categories. Task completed.

If you create a really cool custom section, share it with us in the comments.
