Let’s say you create an invitation video that you want others to see only after viewing the actual invitation. Sending such a video on WhatsApp or other apps wouldn’t be appropriate as you wouldn’t know when the other person opened the actual invitation. So adding a video link to the actual invitation would be a better option.
However, the links are often long. One person will be disappointed if they have to enter such a link and many will skip watching the video. As an alternative, you create a Quick Response aka QR code for your video and then print it on the invitation. The recipient will have to scan the QR code and they will be able to view your video.
But how to generate QR code for video? In short, you need to upload your video online. Then create its shareable link. Using that link you can generate a QR code.
Here are the detailed steps.
1. Upload Videos Online
There are two ways to put videos online: using video hosting sites like YouTube, and with cloud services like Google Drive.
Generate QR code with YouTube
Once you have edited your video and the final version is ready, you have to upload it to YouTube or any other video hosting platform like Vimeo, Dailymotion etc.
To keep it simple, we’ll show you how to add videos on YouTube. If you already know, skip the ‘create link’ part.
Add YouTube videos on mobile apps
To do so, follow these steps:
Step 1: Launch the YouTube app on your phone and sign in with your account.
Step 2: Click on the upload icon present in the top bar. Grant the necessary permissions.
Step 3: I assume you already have the video on your phone. Touch it to select it.
Step 4: Add the right title and description for your video. Set privacy to Public or Unlisted. If the video is set to Private, other people won’t be able to see it. Wait for the video to upload.
Tip:
Step 5: Once the video is up, play the video and press the Share button located below the video. Select Copy link from the menu. Then go to the ‘Use link to generate QR code’ section below.
Add YouTube videos from desktop
Open the YouTube website and sign in with your credentials. Then click the create video button at the top. Select Upload Video from the menu.
Select the video with the link you want to create. Make sure privacy is set to Public or Unlisted. Then add title and description and publish it.
Note:
Play the video and press the Share button. You will be given a Copy button. Click it. Once you have the link, go to the ‘Use link to generate QR code’ section below.
Generate QR code for video without YouTube
If you don’t want to upload your video to a dedicated video sharing site like YouTube, you can upload it to a cloud service like Google Drive, One Drive, Dropbox, etc.
Here are the steps for Google Drive.
Step 1: Upload your video to your Google Drive account.
Step 2: Once the video is uploaded, right-click it on the desktop and select ‘Get shareable link’ from the menu.
On the mobile app, tap the three-dot icon next to the video and enable Share Link. Google Drive’s interface will automatically copy it to your clipboard in both cases.
2. Use the link to generate a QR code for the video
Now that you have the video link, you need to use a third-party service such as an app or website to generate the QR code. Here are some free websites that you can use on Android, iOS, and desktop.
Open one of the web pages and paste the video link you copied earlier. You can change the colors, add a logo and customize the QR code depending on your choices and options provided by the QR generator website. Once you have made the changes, click the Download button present below the QR code.
We recommend that you check the QR code before printing. To check, you need to scan the QR code as mentioned below. Once you’re satisfied with the QR code, it’s time to print it on your business cards, flyers, billboards, posters or anywhere you want.
3. Scan QR code
Whether you want to check a QR code or scan someone else’s QR code, here’s how.
Android
Sadly, all Android phones don’t come with native QR code scanning capabilities. Only if your phone supports Google Lens can you use it to scan QR codes. To do that, open Google Lens by holding down the home button and selecting the Lens option. Then point your camera towards the QR code. If the app reads the QR code successfully, a link will appear. Tap it to launch videos on YouTube or other apps.
If you have a Samsung phone that supports Bixby, you can use Bixby vision to scan a QR code. Similarly, Mi users can use the Scanner app to scan codes. Other users who don’t have any such apps or features can download third-party QR scanner codes from the Play Store.
Iphone
To scan a QR code on your iPhone, you don’t need to download any third-party apps. That’s because the Camera app supports QR code scanning, only if your phone is running iOS 11 or later. So open the Camera app and point it towards the code. Click the link to open the video.
Limit
As you have seen above, it is necessary to upload the video somewhere. Without that, you can’t generate a QR code for it. Second, after scanning the code, you have to tap on the pop-up link to play the video. It does not play the video automatically.
When to generate QR code for video
Now that you have successfully generated a QR code for your video, one might be wondering where else to use it other than your imperative needs.
Well, for starters, if you sell a product, you can create video tutorials and add the link of that product on the packaging using a QR code. Similarly, if you have a video that best describes your work, such as your band or advertising agency, you can add it to your business card. Moreover, you can have it on posters, information brochures and bulletin boards. To make things interesting, you can even add it to the invitation.
Video is the future
For now, that’s how you can generate QR codes for your videos. We want a simple way of existence. A positive note is that technology has changed a lot so now you can create videos from text with just a few clicks. Not only that, given the popularity of video apps like TikTok, video is likely to dominate in the future.
