Templates are an effective way to save time by avoiding repetitive tasks. Instead of designing everything from scratch, you have to fill out these templates according to the current assignment. If you are a regular Canva user, you must know that Canva has many templates for every occasion. However, these templates may not fit our requirements for T. Although Canva allows you to create editable templates, it is only available to Canva Pro users.
If you haven’t upgraded to Canva Pro yet, we have a great tip. Using this trick you can quickly create eye-catching custom templates, whether it’s YouTube thumbnails, Instagram Stories (check out the best Instagram Stories tips and tricks), or Instagram Stories. post or a simple birthday invitation. No racing.
So, let’s see how to create editable templates on Canva.
How to create an editable template on Canva
As you probably already know, templates come in handy when most of your Instagram stories, posts, thumbnails or featured images have the same content or structure. We’ll explore how to create that basic structure and then reuse it in the future. Since prototyping is a Canva Pro feature, we’ll have to use the basic feature of saving designs as PNG/JPG files.
Note: We assume that you already have a Canva account.
How to create an Instagram story template
Step 1: Open Canva in the browser and click the Create Design button in the top right corner.
Step 2: Select Custom Size and add the following size. Next, press the Create New Design button.
1080 to 1920
That will give you a blank canvas with an aspect ratio of 9:16.
Step 3: Next, click on the Untitled Design crossword as shown below and name the design. For this tutorial, we have named it GuidingTech Eng.
Now, all you need to do is fill in the elements like background, fixed text, and frame. More importantly, you should have a color scheme that matches the theme of your work.
For example, Guiding Tech’s theme colors are Heliotrope and White. Therefore, we have used these colors for the text and background.
Step 4: Once done, press Ctrl + S button to save all your recent changes. While Canva has autosave by default, it won’t hurt to save your progress manually.
So the next time you have to create an Instagram Story, open Canva > Projects and you’ll find the saved design in Design.
After you locate it, replace the necessary part, then download the design. It’s about it!
Pro tip: You can animate designs to make them come to life.
How to create an Instagram post template
Unlike Stories, Instagram Posts are square or rectangular. To get the perfect resolution and size, you can choose one of the sizes below,
- Square: 1080px x 1080px
- Landscape: 1080px x 566px
Step 1: Open Canva > Create Design and choose one of the sizes above. In our case, we chose a 1:1 aspect ratio.
Like above, add all the necessary graphic elements like background, frame, text, and optional watermark. It is important to add all the important elements now so that later you only have to do it to a minimum.
Step 2: Click Add Page to add a few pages. 
The idea is to add several patterns at once so that you can have the flexibility to combine designs later. For example, here are some of our samples.
The good thing is that Canva allows you to download a single page.
Step 3: Once done, give it a suitable name and save. Next time you need to download a specific frame, choose Share > Download and click Choose Page.
Enter the page number and you will find that particular page in your Downloads folder. Cool, right?
How to create a YouTube thumbnail template
YouTube follows the traditional 16:9 aspect ratio, and YouTube thumbnails are 1280×720 pixels. Unlike Instagram posts and stories, YouTube thumbnails are a bit different in that they must contain a watermark, text, and a bit of eye-catching text.
The process is somewhat similar to the one above, except that you will use fewer graphic elements and rely more on backgrounds and text.
The good thing is that Canva comes with a ton of text options – free and paid. And if you want, you can just view the free fonts by adding Free Fonts in the search box as shown below.
From then on, the process is simple. Create as many templates on different pages as you like, then save them.
Once done, you’ll see all the saved pages in your Project > Design.
Canva has some nifty features. For example, you can share links to templates with some of your team members so they can contribute to them too.
Since the designs we just created aren’t quite templates, the last saved images and graphics will show up as up-to-date. Therefore, we recommend using the Duplicate function in Design so that the base design is not overwritten. And from time to time, you can delete designs you don’t want.
