GT For Beginners: How to Create a Blog on WordPress.com

One of the most popular words in the Internet glossary today is Blog. Some people use it for a job like keeping a daily personal diary or showing off their creative skills, while some see it as a career.

Of course, this site is also a blog. It might get a little complicated since it works like a publishing business with a bunch of writers but that doesn’t mean the people out there can’t easily create a blog of your own. Previously, we discussed how you can quickly create a blog with Tumblr, with Posterous, and create personal pages with Flavors.me.

So there are ways to quickly start blogging but if you want to enjoy a bit more flexibility and customization then I recommend WordPress. It’s been almost 5 years that I’ve been using WordPress for my blog and believe me, it has never let me down.

If someone asks me what’s cool in WordPress, I’ll say everything. Whether you are a beginner or a professional, WordPress can fit everyone’s needs. It’s free, easy to use, secure, highly customizable, and backed by the best community of bloggers.

In this article, we will discuss how to create a blog with WordPress.com, the easier and more widely used version. It also offers a self-hosted version at WordPress.org but that is beyond the scope of this article and not for the average computer user.

Create Blog

Step 1: Go to the WordPress homepage and click the orange button that says Get Started Here.

Start

Step 2: On the next screen, you will have to give your blog a name. You can easily get a free WordPress subdomain but if you want a premium domain like .com or .net there is an option for that too. Also provide your desired valid username, password and email address and click next.

Create a WordPress account

Step 3: Your blog is almost ready; now you have to click on the confirmation link in the mail sent to you by WordPress.

Once the new WordPress.com blog has been successfully set up, you can log in with your credentials at http://wordpress.com.

WordPress Dashboard First Look

As soon as you click on the confirmation link, you will be taken to your WordPress blog dashboard. The dashboard is the back end of your blog, from where you can write new posts and control many important settings and features.

dashboard

The left side of the Dashboard contains all the options for configuring your blog like composing posts, creating user profiles, changing themes and other related settings. On the right side, you can see stats on posts and comments, current topic names and latest comments on your blog, including pending comments, quick press section and on all visitor profiles.

Next time you want to login to your Dashboard you can use the link http://.wordpress.com/wp-admin

Profiles, themes and general settings

Well, these are the first two things that need to be taken care of. To edit your profile, click Users on the left sidebar and click edit next to your username.

Now you can fill in the respective fields to complete your profile with all your contact details. To assign your profile a global avatar, you can use Gravatar.

File

Now click on Appearance—>Themes and choose one of the many available themes that you think will best suit your blog. You can preview your theme before committing to any theme. There are many premium themes available but they come with a price tag.

You will now come to a page that looks like this.

Add New Blog

Let’s start with entering a catchy title for your blog post.

You can now compose the main body of your post. Here you can insert images and videos, format text, and add links. If you are not satisfied with the visual editor, you can click HTML to load the HTML editor.

Sad blog

Now you should categorize your post and add some valid tags to it.

Tgs And Category
