A few weeks ago, HP invited me to an event in Delhi where they showcased their upcoming printers and technologies like ePrint that makes printing everywhere.
I was quite impressed with the presentations and talks by many HP executives, and so when they suggested that they wanted to send me a review unit of one of their new-generation printers, I readily agreed.
We haven’t had many articles about printers so far so I thought this would be a good opportunity to post some articles starting right from the basics of printer setup and setup to more advanced articles.
Today, we’re going to talk about setting up and installing the HP Officejet 6500A Plus All-in-One printer (the picture above shows the review unit I received). I’m not sure when they released this product, but it’s a pretty good product with lots of good functions. And usually, the setup and installation process is the same for almost all printers, so this is a post suitable for all those who are thinking of buying a new printer soon.
So let’s see how to set up and install this printer (or any printer for that matter).
Setting Up and Installing the Printer Software
Each printer comes with a picture guide of the setup process. I followed these steps to set it up:
1. Remove the tape and plastic film, put the paper trays in the correct order.
2. Connect the power cord and turn on the power.
3. This printer has a touch screen that shows clear animations of next steps after you power it on. It shows exactly how to remove the coating from the ink cartridges and install them correctly in the printer. You should refer to the manual while installing the toner cartridge.
4. This printer also comes with a cylindrical attachment that I have to attach to the back of it and this accessory is supposed to help me with duplex printing.
In general, referencing the manual and setting up the printer is not difficult at all. I am now ready to use the installation CD that came with the printer to install the printer driver on my computer. Windows users need to make sure they insert the disc first, follow the instructions, and only connect the printer to the computer when the software requires it. Mac users need to connect the printer first.
Here are the steps to install the printer driver.
Step 1. After you run the CD, it will show the installation window starting.
Step 2. Click the Connect a new printer link in the next window that appears.
Step 3. It will show both USB and Wireless connection options. I decided to use the USB cable option for now.
Step 4. This is the point where the software asks you to physically connect the printer to the computer using a USB cable.
Step 5. It will show that the USB connection is in progress. This process may take a few minutes so you need to wait.
Finally, the successful connection message appears.
Step 6. You may also want to set up Fax. We will ignore it for now.
Step 7. Finally, you can set it as your default printer and click Finish.
The printer will show up in the Devices and Printers window, which you can access from the Start Menu.
The following screen shows the different options that the HP Officejet 6500A Plus All-in-One printer displays when double-clicking its icon in the Printers and Faxes section.
It’s about setting up and installing an HP Inkjet printer. Depending on the type of printer you have, the steps above will be more or less the same.
