How to Recover Deleted Files Using Recuva

We delete files by mistake, right? And while deleting is easy, restoring them is not. Fortunately, there are free file recovery tools available. Recuva is one of them. This is quite a useful and feature-rich tool that can recover files you deleted by mistake. It is free to download and easy to use.

Besides Windows computers, it also supports removable media such as Smartmedia, Secure Digital Cards, Memory Cards, Digital Cameras, Sony Memory Cards, Compact Flash Cards and many more.

Note: According to the developers of Recuva, it can also recover data from formatted drives. It can also recover deleted messages from your mail client. It supports Microsoft Outlook Express, Mozilla Thunderbird or Windows Live Mail. We haven’t tested these features yet, though.

How to use Recuva to recover deleted files

1. Download, install and run the program on your computer. A welcome screen will appear. Click “Next” to continue.

2. It will ask what type of file are you trying to retrieve? Check any one of the given options. If you want to retrieve two file types, eg. photos and music, you cannot select both options at the same time. There is a trick though. You can use advanced options which I will discuss later in this guide.

3. Select the location where you want to retrieve the file. Now the second option “On memory card or my iPod” can be useful if you want to retrieve deleted files from removable media such as the memory card of your phone, iPod or digital camera.

If you want to see any specific location on your computer, click the “Browse” button.

5. Browse the folder. Here I choose drive C. because I want to get back my desktop pictures that I accidentally deleted a few days ago.

6. In the next screen, click the “Start” button. Do not select the deep scan option until you have failed the first file recovery. Note that “Deep Scan” may take more than an hour depending on the size of your hard disk.

7. The process will begin. I was surprised to see the scanning speed. It’s really fast. It scanned 38 GB of data within 5 seconds. Very effective. Now it’s time to see the results.

8. It will show all deleted files (Recuva doesn’t let me down. It shows more than 122 deleted files including the one I’m looking for). To retrieve the file, check the box next to the file name and click the “Recover” button.

9. Select the folder where you want to restore your files. You should choose a different drive or folder than the scanned drive (I scan drive C to find all deleted files, so I choose drive D to recover those files). After selecting the appropriate location, press the OK button.

10. Now check the directory. You will get your file back. Now suppose you want to scan for deleted music. You don’t need to go back and start the process again. Just click the “Go to advanced mode” button in the opened Recuva Window.

In advanced mode, you can select any type of drive and media from the drop-down menu. There is an “options” button available where you can choose different options like language, view mode, secure override and other scanning options.

This way you can use Recuva to recover deleted files. I find this tool useful because it is faster and more efficient than other similar utilities.
