How To Create Desktop Application Shortcuts In Chrome

Creating desktop shortcuts for frequently visited websites is a smart time-saver. Google Chrome provides an easy option to create desktop application shortcuts. It’s not like creating a website shortcut in other browsers. These shortcuts help you to open websites/apps in their dedicated chrome window.

You can create shortcuts to quickly launch frequently visited websites like Facebook, Gmail or Google reader.

Here are the steps involved.

Open the web page inside the browser for which you want to create the shortcut. Click on the page menu given in the top right corner. On the drop-down menu, click “Create application shortcut”.

You’ll find options to create desktop shortcuts, the start menu, and the quick launch bar. You can choose all or any one of them. As you can see in the screenshot below, I am creating a shortcut for Facebook. You can do the same with your favorite web apps like Twitter, Gmail, Hotmail, etc.

On your desktop you will find a newly created shortcut icon. Click on it and chrome will open the app in a new window. It’s a standalone window without any other settings or tabs and allows you to browse the website in a distraction-free environment.

If you use Chrome as your main browser then you can use the above method to create an application shortcut. It will reduce the number of tabs by providing a separate window for the main web pages. Hope you haven’t forgotten the tab pinning technique we discussed, this is another useful trick to reduce tab area in chrome.
