We’ve talked about folder rules in MS Outlook before, and we’ve also seen how that helps us organize and automate our emails. In a similar context, we also learned how to use rule generation to manage solutions like simulating holiday responses and customizing mail alert templates.
Today we’re going to talk about another desktop email client, Windows Live Mail (WLM), and we’ll see how to create and apply mail rules on it. We will test the general steps and then each of us can fine-tune the actions to what we really need.
Steps to create mail rules in Windows Live Mail
In our example, we chose a single checkpoint on the message and two action points on anything that matches the criteria. The steps will be very similar to anything you want to create.
Step 1: Open the Windows Live Mail client on the desktop. Navigate to Folder tab and click message rules to get started with setup.
Step 2: Switch to New rule tab and click the read button New. A dialog box for New Mail Rule will be launched.
Step 3: Select and tick the conditions (checkpoints) that you want to apply to incoming messages. Then select the actions that must be applied on messages that match or pass the checkpoints.
Step 4: While selecting conditions and actions, you will notice that a rule is defined (in words) on the third part of the pop-up. You must click on each link that appears and define additional specifications as required.
In our case we have to add the list of checked people as contained in From line. You can add people from Contact or enter the address manually and tap Add.
Besides, you can move deeper into Option and refine the rule condition in a more granular way.
The other link in our rules asks us to add a list of people to whom the message must be forwarded. It is quite easy and simple to follow the steps.
Steps to apply rules in Windows Live Mail
Once you save the message rule you just created, you’ll see another window to activate the rule. Alternatively you can bring it up by routing to Folder -> Message Rules.
Select the rules that you want to apply to the current system. Use Go up And Downward buttons to change the order and options of rule execution. Click Apply now and exit setup.
Conclusion
Creating rules and optimizing the use of Windows Live Mail is really up to you. I mean, you can create almost any set of conditions and action plans to meet your needs. Share with us the rules you plan to create and implement.
