How to Create a Custom Template in Notion

Notion is making waves in the productivity space. The company recently made the software available for free for personal use. This decision has led to a spike in Notion usage. Right from the start, Notion felt quite overwhelming. Thankfully, Notion has a rich library of templates. That also helps it stand out from Trello, Evernote, OneNote, and others.

How to create custom templates in concept

Templates are at the heart of the Notion experience. You can use the built-in template to get started or create a custom template from scratch. You can use templates for tasks, travel planning, financial tracking, booking tracking, project management, etc.

Your template selection is not limited to the Notion library. You can browse the sample library from the Notion user community. Notion also allows you to create a template for your specific use. This is how I used Notion in the first place.

If you’re just getting started with Notion and aren’t sure where to start, then you really need to check out our comprehensive Notion tips and tricks for beginners. It goes over all you need to know to get started with Notion properly.

Why you need to create a custom template in Notion

With custom templates, you can easily replicate content combinations that you use frequently in Notion.

For example, let’s say you want to fill out the same form every day, asking you what makes you grateful without having to re-create that form over and over. Or you want to create the same to-do list at the beginning of each week. You can also build a custom financial tracker according to your usage and reuse it monthly.

Notion allows you to create a custom template with the help of a template button. Let’s talk about how to find and use the Template button in Notion.

How to create Custom Template in Notion using Template Button?

Here, I will create two custom templates in Notion. As I mentioned, you can create a template from scratch or use the built-in template, make the necessary changes and save it as a custom template for later use.

I entered the Weekly agenda template on my Concepts page. I changed the icon, added the cover photo, relevant template details and now it’s ready to use. I’ll be using this template weekly, so it’s impractical to import the same template every time and make changes. Instead, I’ll make a template out of it. Follow the steps below to create a custom template in Notion.

Step 1: Import the relevant template from the template library and make the necessary changes to it.

Step 2: Create a new page in Notion and give it an appropriate title.

Step 3: Type ‘/template’ and Notion will allow you to create a custom template button.

Step 4: The software will open the ‘Sample button configuration’ box.

Add sample button

Step 5: First, add a relevant name for the template button.

Step 6: Now you need to add the blocks that you want to copy wherever the button is clicked.

Step 7: By default, this button is set as the To-Do button. Tap the six-dot menu and delete it.

Step 8: From the Notion sidebar, drag the create template to the template button.

Drag and drop

Step 9: Press the ‘Close’ button and now the template button is ready to use.

You can drag and drop this button onto any Notion page and with one click you can create a custom template for yourself.

Financial tracker button

I created another template for monthly financial tracking. Following the above steps, you can create a template button for your monthly financial tracker and use it monthly.

You can also create sample buttons for common tasks. I’ve seen Notion users use the todo template button to create tasks quickly.

How to edit or delete the template button

Notion allows the flexibility to change the name and content of the template button. At any point, you can change it or even delete the template node.

Hover your cursor above the template button and you’ll see a small ‘Settings’ icon at the bottom of the template button. Tap on it and it will open a pop-up box to change the name and template button block for it.

Configure Templates

You can also tap the six-dot menu and remove the template button entirely. Don’t worry, though, this will only remove the template node and not make any changes to the existing templates.

Using Notion Like a Pro

As I mentioned, templates take the Notion experience to the next level. You can use an existing template and modify it as well as turn it into a template button. I’ve seen users create another Notion template from scratch and turn it into a template button for regular use. How would you use the sample button in Notion?
