Google Docs is a great word processing platform. It’s free, web-based, and offers seamless collaboration between users. It’s no surprise that Google’s services are popular among small businesses, educational institutions, and individuals. While you can always compose a document from scratch, the real treasure lies in the Google Docs templates.

Google Document Template

Using templates, one can quickly create a flyer, business letter, company board, professional brochure, etc. Google packs quite a few templates. The internet is full of third-party developers that create specific Google Docs templates based on different categories. But what if you want more personalization and greater control over the template in Google Docs? In that case, you need to create a template or use an existing template and make the necessary changes.

Why do you need a custom template in Google Docs? If you find yourself creating the same document layout over and over again, you can save yourself a huge amount of time with a template.

This post will talk about how to create a custom template in Google Docs using different background colors, font styles, types, etc. Let’s get started.

Choose a template

First, you need to decide how you want to create a template in Google Docs. You can start using a blank document or choose a beautiful template and make the necessary changes to it. We will talk about both methods here.

Let’s create a template using a blank canvas. Follow the steps below.

Step 1: Go to Google Docs on the web.

Step 2: Click the + icon and select a blank canvas.

Create a new document

Step 3: Give the template a suitable name.

Now, let’s design a template with related details.

Add background color

If you’re not a fan of the boring Google Docs background, you can change it to your favorite color. Follow the steps below to change background color in Google Docs. If you’re fine with a white background, then skip this part.

Step 1: Open the File menu and select the option labeled Page Setup.

Step 2: Expand the color picker under Page Color.

Settings page

Step 3: Choose the color you want from the presets provided.

Select Custom if you want to fine-tune your color selection. You can also add hexadecimal color codes to get the exact background color you want.

Change color

You can also click Set as Default if you want to set the selected color to automatically apply to new documents. That won’t affect older documents—you have to manually change the color on each document if necessary.

Now that you have selected the background color for the template, let’s add the relevant details.

Add text, company logo and horizontal lines

You can use Heading, Subheading, Heading 1/2/3 and add related details to the document. I have added the company name, tagline and address. So I don’t have to deal with them again.

Touch the Insert menu, choose Image > Upload from Computer. Add your company logo and keep it in a more appropriate place. I have kept it in the upper right corner.

To add horizontal lines, choose Insert > Horizontal Line. It gives a nice layout break to a document.

Horizon line

You can now add a generic text to a Google Docs document. For example, you can write down general company guidelines, rules, and some introductory details.

Using third-party templates

The way mentioned above is a simple trick to create a custom template on Google Docs. You can also choose a third-party template and make minor changes to it. Let me show you an example.

In the image below, I have downloaded the Sales for Google Docs template. Opened the document in the app and made relevant changes like Company Name, Address, Email and Phone Number.

Now, I can save the template and from next time, I only need to change the small details like item for sale, discount rate, sale name, etc. In just a few minutes, I have a flyer ready to send go print.

Save and reuse Google Docs templates

After making the necessary changes, tap the move folder menu and save the template to the Google Drive folder. Now, remember that this is your main template file in Google Docs. You should not make any changes to the original file.

Whenever you want to use a template for quick document creation, follow the steps below.

Step 1: Go to Google Drive on the web and find the template you want to use.

Save template

Step 2: Open the template in Google Docs.

Step 3: Don’t make any changes now as it will mess up the original custom document.

Make a copy of the template

Step 4: Instead, tap File > Make a copy and save to Google Drive.
