How to Fix Scroll Bar Is Not Showing in Chrome Error

Google Chrome has a large following because it works hard to cover up. One of the recent bugs appearing on this platform is the issue of missing scrollbars. That’s where users complain that the scrollbar is not visible or simply disappears from the screen. It can be frustrating because now, you don’t know how much more you need to scroll to get to the bottom of the page.

You also can’t click and drag the scroll bar up or down but that’s not a big deal. You can always use the mouse wheel or the arrow keys on your keyboard to scroll. However, it kind of ruined the experience. In my opinion, you should fix any bug before it gets out of control or causes any further damage.

Let’s get started.

1. Update Chrome

Are you using the latest version of Chrome? You can download the latest version using the link below. However, I recommend updating from the browser. To do so, click the three-dot menu and select About Google Chrome in the Help section.

That’s when Chrome will automatically check for new updates and will notify you about the same. You can also check the current version there.

Normally, Chrome updates are applied without any problems. However, you may want to download it from the official website, just in case something goes wrong.

2. Website problem

In rare cases, there may be a problem with the way the page loads in your browser. It means the scrollbar is broken or not working as expected on the web page. You can check easily by going to any other website to see if the scrollbar is visible there. Alternatively, you can open the same page in a different browser.

3. Extensions

Extensions are small packages of scripts that improve the look, performance and usability of browsers and the web-based versions of applications that we use on our computers. They can also mess up the way other extensions work and break the way the Chrome browser works. Did you install a new extension recently?

An easy way to check is to open Incognito mode. That will disable pretty much every extension, except for some, like anti-virus or security software. If so, disable them manually by pressing Ctrl+Shift+N on your keyboard to open a new private window. Now open the same web page and see if the scroll bar shows up. If yes, one of the extensions is messing up the code.

You will have to disable the extensions one by one to find the culprit. You can also go directly to the most recently installed Chrome extension.

Type this in Chrome’s address bar and press Enter.

chrome://extensions/

Click the disable icon below each extension.

4. Hardware acceleration

Hardware acceleration was introduced in Chrome to make scrolling smoother and improve media consumption. However, it has been a source of nothing but problems over the years. As with many other Chrome-related errors, disabling it can help fix the scrollbar not showing error.

Click the menu icon to select Settings or type it directly in the address bar.

chrome://settings/

Restart Chrome if necessary and try again.

5. Flag Overlay-Scrollbar

Flags are experimental features still under development and may or may not be available. However, there are quite a few gems if you know where to look. One such flag is the #overlay-scrollbar flag.

Then look for the flag above.

Activate it from the right. Now relaunch Chrome and see if you can find the missing scrollbar in Chrome.

6. Reset Chrome

Resetting Chrome to default settings will not delete your saved bookmarks and passwords. Do not worry. Open Chrome and go to Settings. Scroll to the bottom of the page to find and click the Advanced option.

Under Reset and clean at the bottom, click Restore settings to factory defaults.

This will take some time and as noted, cookies and other temporary data will be deleted from your computer. All settings will return to default and extensions will be disabled. After you reset Chrome, I recommend restarting Chrome once before checking for scrollbar issues.

7. Reinstall Chrome

If resetting Chrome doesn’t work as expected and you still don’t see the scrollbar, then you should try reinstalling Chrome.

Close Chrome. Open Settings by pressing Windows key + I button to open Settings. Click Apply here.

8. Other Browser

If you’re still having issues with Chrome, I’d suggest an alternative. I have been using the Brave browser for a while and have found it to be faster and better than Chrome at blocking ads and other third-party scripts. Also, it supports all Chrome extensions as it is built on Chromium. Brave is a privacy-focused blockchain powered browser. Check it out.

The mentioned solutions are enough to solve the scrollbar missing error in Chrome. However, if it still doesn’t work, try using another browser. Some of them are really good, others are even better.
