Google Docs is a pretty nifty tool for creating documents like letters, announcements, contracts, assignments, etc. You can even use Google Docs templates for business and productivity needs. But no matter what type of document you create, adding margins is always important to the overall look of the document.
By default, Google Docs provides a one-inch margin size for all four sides of the page. But you can customize the margin according to your needs. This post will show you how to change margins in Google Docs on Desktop and Mobile.
Change the margin on the screen with the ruler icon
A margin is an area in a document that prevents your content from touching the edges of the page. If you’re using Google Docs on your desktop, the first way to change the margins is to use Rulers. Although the Ruler icon (blue arrow pointing downwards) is displayed by default, here’s how you can enable it if you can’t see it on your document.
Step 1: Open a browser and access docs.google.com.
Step 2: Sign in to your Google account.
Step 3: Click Blank Document or open an existing document.
Step 4: Click View from the Top Menu Bar.
Step 5: Click Show Ruler from the list of options.
After activating the ruler, you are free to change the margins.
Step 1: To change the left margin, hover your mouse pointer over the Ruler icon near the gray area in the top left corner.
Step 2: Click and drag the Ruler icon to change the left margin according to your selection.
You should see a left margin appear on the document.
Step 3: To change the right margin, hover your mouse pointer over the Ruler icon near the gray area in the top right corner.
Step 4: Click and drag the Ruler icon to change the right margin according to your selection.
Again, you will see the right margin appear for your reference.
Change Desktop Margins with Page Setup
If you want to be more precise in setting margins according to your document needs, you can manually enter margin values in Google Docs. This is the way.
Step 1: Open Google Docs in a web browser on your computer.
Step 2: Sign in to your Google account.
Step 3: Click Blank Document or open an existing document.
Step 4: Once your document opens, click File in the top left corner in the Menu Bar.
Step 5: Select Page Setup from the list of options.
Step 6: In the Page Setup window, enter margin values for left, right, bottom, or top.
Step 7: After entering the values, click Ok in the lower right corner.
You can keep these margin values the same for any new documents by clicking Set as Default in the bottom left corner.
The Page Setup window allows you to change the Page Orientation and Size.

Change margins in Google Docs on mobile devices
If you have to change margins in Google Docs on Android or iPhone, there are some simple steps to do the same. But before that, we recommend checking that you are using the latest version of the Google Docs app on your mobile phone.
After updating the app, here’s how you can change the margins. The steps are the same for both iPhone and Android users.
Step 1: Open the Google Docs app on your iPhone or Android.
Step 2: Sign in to your Google Account.
Step 3: Click the Plus icon at the bottom to open a new or existing document.
Step 4: Once the document opens, tap the three dots in the top right corner.
Step 5: Select Page Setup from the list of options.
Step 6: Click on Margin.
Step 7: Select the margin style of your choice.
You can tap Customize and enter margin values according to your document category.
Step 5: Click Apply in the upper right corner to confirm your choice.
Step 6: After selecting the margin, tap the three dots in the top right corner.
Step 7: Tap the toggle to enable Page Layout.
After enabling this feature, you can view your document with selected margin options.
