How to Always Run a Program as Administrator in Windows 7

Security experts often recommend users to use accounts with lower privileges to prevent the system from malware attacks and other risks. The Administrator account has the highest privileges, can control the entire system, is used only when necessary.

In Windows, you’ll find that by default, most programs run in standards mode (even if you’re using the administrative user profile). But there are programs (like the Windows 7 DreamScene Activator we talked about) that need to be started in administrator mode for them to work properly. Also, sometimes even popular applications like Notepad need to be run as administrator, as you saw yesterday in our HOSTS file editing post.

So how do you run a program as administrator? Well, just right-click on the program and select “Run as administrator” in the context menu. Better yet, you can use the keyboard shortcut to do it.

But it can be a bit inconvenient to repeat the same steps over and over, especially if the program is always run in administrator mode. Keeping that in mind, here are two solutions.

1. Activate the Administrator account

Yes, you can enable the built-in Administrator account in the system, which is hidden by default (this is a dangerous method, by the way..read on to find out why).

Type “cmd” into the Windows search bar, then right-click the “cmd” entry, select “Run as administrator”.

Enter the following command into it:

network/activity user admin: yes

The command prompt will return the result of the execution, which will be:

The command completed successfully.

You can now migrate your personal data from the current user profile to the new profile and launch any program as an administrator.

Important: The above method is equivalent to disabling UAC as well as other system protection features. Therefore, if you have not been a computer player since childhood and know what you are doing, follow the suggested next method.

2. Create a shortcut with administrator privileges

A better solution is to create a shortcut with administrator privileges. This can be done for specific applications that need to be run as administrator frequently.

Right-click the program icon present on the desktop, taskbar, start menu, or any other location.

Go to properties, then switch to the “Shortcuts” tab, there you will find a button labeled “Advanced”. Click it.

Check the “Run as administrator” box, and then press OK.

From now on, this shortcut icon will always run the program with administrator rights.

Note: Again, before going ahead and enabling this for a program, make sure it’s secure enough.
