How Can You Free Up 3 GB of Space on Your iPhone

Just like any other operating system, iOS is clogged from time to time with junk files and app caches. Now I don’t believe this makes my iPhone slow all the time. But there will come a day when you really want to reclaim that space to use it effectively. For me, it was the Call of Duty setting on my iPhone.

I need about 2 GB of space and I have only 682 MB left. But after a few hours, I was able to reclaim the junk space on my iPhone and play the game I wanted. Here is a brief document on how I was able to delete up to 3 GB of junk on my iPhone. I’m sure it will help you, today or tomorrow.

Let’s start with Rookie Stuff

Before you start cleaning, always remember that every byte counts and you can’t delete GBs of files in one go. A little patience is needed as we will take it one step at a time. So let’s start with the Camera Roll. You may already know some of this, but not everyone knows.

After updating to iOS 8, you may notice an extra field called Recently deleted Albums. Album stores the images you deleted from your device for the next 30 days before deleting them permanently. So if you have some files in your Recently Deleted album, you might want to delete them all to free up space. Deleting files from the Camera Roll will have no effect as long as you still have traces of it in the deleted folder.

Cool Tip: Users with Jailbreak access can install Delete Recently deleted tweak to get the old one back Delete works on their iPhone.

So that’s for the photos you deleted. But what about those unnecessary photos that have been sitting in your album for years with no purpose? You can use Moment view and delete photos in bulk from a specific time period, or you can use a simple app called Slidebox. Slidebox is a pretty neat app that deletes unnecessary photos in your spare time.

Just like Tinder, this app shows you photos from your album, and you can swipe right or left to keep or delete them. Don’t forget to permanently delete these files once you’re done.

Application and application data

Once you’re done with the Camera Roll, it’s time to move on to the apps section. Of course, the first thing I’d say is to get rid of apps you don’t need, but that’s always a tough choice. Even for me I can’t uninstall more than a few apps.

But then, when I checked the list of installed apps on the App Store, I was surprised to see apps like WhatsApp and Hike taking up storage space. On the day of the initial installation they didn’t take up more than 300 MB, but today they take up more than 1 GB due to all the media stored by those apps.

Of course, you can open the app and delete individual chats. But I found that uninstalling and reinstalling the app reduces the time from a few hours to just a few minutes. You can also clear and free up some space from your music library.

Reach the professional level

There are many cleaner apps on the App Store, but trust me, none of them work on a non-jailbroken iPhone. The journey of non-jailbroken iPhone users ends here. But if you have a jailbroken iPhone, the most exciting part is yet to come.

Using iCleaner

iCleaner is an app for jailbroken iPhones that really impresses me when it comes to cleaning up junk. Just install and run analysis operation on the app will scan your phone. The app gives you a full list of areas it will scan, including messages, attachments, and even the app cache.

Once analyzed, the app will give you a list of all the files and folders it can delete along with the space it will free up. Last time I deleted files with this app, it had about 1.8 GB of junk files. Even today, after just a week, it was able to delete about 600 MB of unnecessary data. Phone reboots after every clean.

Delete application documents and data

Remember when I mentioned that you can uninstall and reinstall an app to get rid of its cache and data files? Well, for a jailbroken phone it’s not necessary. Install a tweak called Cache Cleaner from the http://rpetri.ch/repo repo and refresh your phone.

For Android users: You can easily clear your app data; it’s a built-in feature in your phone. Go Setting > Application management then select the app you want to remove and press Clear data > ALRIGHT. There is no need to uninstall/reinstall or strictly manipulate this third party application.

You should be able to clear the cache or completely reset the app from the iOS settings menu below Use the app.

Conclusion

Those were some of the last bits I removed from my 16GB iPhone and was able to reclaim up to 3GB of storage. On my wife’s 64GB iPhone (yes, she gets to keep the expensive stuff) we can free up 6.5GB and you won’t believe 2GB of that is from WhatsApp alone. So go ahead and get some free space on your iPhone.
