I’ve been using Chrome as my default browser for almost 3 years and it’s come a long way. Although it is resource-intensive, changing browsers is overwhelming. Especially after you’ve been crafting your browsing experience for years using various extensions, add-ons, and themes.
If you’re a Chrome fan, I’m sure you’ll sympathize with my thoughts. Shortcuts and a tabbed interface make browsing a pleasurable experience. But what if you could get the same tabbed interface experience when browsing files on Windows 10? Pretty interesting, I know!
Clover for Windows is a simple application that adds multi-tab functionality similar to the Google Chrome browser to your Windows explorer. So let’s see how to install and get the most out of it on Widows 10.
Setting up Clover on Windows 10
Clover is officially supported until Windows 8, but we’re not sure if the update will be released for Widows 10 anytime soon. The final version i.e. Clover 3 installs just fine in Windows 10, but needs a simple tweak before it can work perfectly.
To get started, download and extract the Clover file to a folder and launch the setup file.
Just follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup. There is nothing to select here and the default setup should work fine. Once the app launches, you’ll see a Chrome-style window explorer. But before you start, open Tools and click Folder Options (press the ALT button on the Keyboard to bring up the menu). Here navigate to See and uncheck the option Launch folder windows in a separate process and save the settings.
Finally, restart your computer for the changes to take effect. Restarting the computer is essential otherwise you may face some problems when using the application for the first time.
Use clover
Clover will integrate itself into the Windows shell and make it the default file browser. So every time you click File Explorer on Task Manager, it launches Clover with a tabbed interface. Like I said before, it works like Chrome, you can use most of the shortcuts from Chrome to manage here. Like Ctrl + T to open a new tab and Ctrl + W to close a tab and Ctrl + Tab to switch tabs/windows. If you really enjoy working with keyboard shortcuts, it almost doubles your efficiency.
You have a bookmarks bar where you can add frequently used files and folders. Press the Ctrl + D button to speed things up.
One of the best advantages of Clover is that on Chromium engine we can use themes. Chrome browser .crx theme files can be imported into Clover to give Clover a whole new look. Click the Clover Settings button in the upper right corner and select Setting select.
Here, click Get theme and browse for the theme file you downloaded. If you don’t have a .crx theme file, you can use this Theme Website to download a few files to get started. There are a few additional options you can configure here.
Conclusion
So that’s pretty much everything about Clover and the tabbed browser interface it offers. The app is a bit old now, but I’m sure, for most of you, it might be something new for you to try. Don’t forget to share your feedback with us.
