With the simultaneous release of iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, Apple has delivered some of the most exciting features it has had in a while: Handoff and AirDrop. With these, if you have both an iOS device and a Mac, you can communicate with each other more than ever before.
For example, this lets you use your iPhone to start writing a message and then pick up where you left off on your Mac with a single click. Or you might be working on a Numbers spreadsheet on your Mac and then instantly access it on your iPad just by swiping up on the lock screen.
While all of this sounds great, not all Macs are supported. In fact, in a strange move by Apple, even some Macs capable of implementing the feature don’t have it. This was exactly my case, as I have a Macbook Air from 2011 that uses Bluetooth 4.0 (required for these features) and this Mac has been deprecated from supported Apple devices, as well as Mac mini 2011.
Thankfully, if you own one of these Macs, some clever developers have made it ‘Continuous Activation Tool’a tool that, as the name implies, will not only allow you to enable Continuity on your Mac, but also AirDrop.
Let’s see how to use this tool to enable these really handy features.
Important Note: Needless to say, you should back everything up before proceeding, as doing this trick will change some important files on your Mac. Proceed at your own risk and only if you know what you are doing. Also, you should know that this tool disables OS X security features to work. Please ensure that you have read the ‘Warnings’ section of this website before proceeding.
Enable Continuous Features
Step 1: First, go to download Continuous Activation Tool from this site (link on the right). Once done, click download to run it.
If you’ve configured your Mac’s security settings to only download apps from the Mac App Store, you’ll have to access your Mac. Security & Privacy installed in Interest to be able to open this tool.
Step 2: When you run the tool, it will open End app and asks you for a password. Enter it and press the . button Enter key.
On the next screen, you will be asked to choose between three numbered options. Just type number one (1) to select Continuous activation.
Step 3: After a while, Terminal will most likely display an error as shown below and ask you to restart your Mac.
Before restarting, however, you’ll have to disable iCloud both on your Mac and on your iOS device to get rid of this error and enable Continuity. Don’t worry about losing your stuff though. When I did this, I got everything back as it was when I reactivated iCloud.
Step 4: Once you do this, restart your Mac and run Continuous Activation Tool again until it completes the process without errors. If you want, you can restart your Mac again.
Then sign back in to iCloud on your Mac and on your iOS device.
Now on your Mac, if you visit Options > General, you’ll see a new option there (second option from the bottom) that allows you to finally enable Handoff between your devices. Be sure to check it out.
Likewise, on your iOS device, go to Setting > overview to activate Hand.
Use the features continuously
Now for the fun part: actually using all these cool, new features. However, the more interesting part of this is that once set up, there is almost nothing to do.
For example, to use Handoff, simply use one of the supported apps on your Mac or iOS device, then choose the other.
Let’s say I’m using Safari on my Mac, Numbers or Messages (third party apps will add this soon). All I have to do is pick up my iPhone and I’ll see one of the screens below.
Then I just swipe up and I’m taken not only to the app I’m using on my Mac, but to the exact location/phrase/recipe I was doing when I left. Pretty neat.
And if you’re using your iPhone, just go all the way to the left in multitasking view to access Handoff.
Now, when you’re using your iPhone and accessing your Mac, you’ll see the app you’re using on your phone to the left of the Dock as an icon, allowing you to open it right where it is. you have stopped on the iOS device.
In the same way, you’ll find that AirDrop is now also enabled between your Mac and your iOS device. Just enable it on your iOS device and on your Mac, then head to the AirDrop folder. You should now have both devices communicating with each other, allowing you to exchange files.
And there you go. Once you start using these features, you will definitely find it worthwhile to enable them. Hopefully Apple will change its mind about leaving some Macs without them in the future. But if that doesn’t happen, you can already enjoy them now.
