Blame it on the breakneck pace of mobile software or the neglect of the rest, but iOS doesn’t support nearly as many languages as it should. While everyone must know a little English to live a good life in this connected world, sometimes you still need a quick translation.
Maybe English is not your first language and while learning it you cannot read long articles in English. Or you are visiting a new country and want to quickly translate some text. Well, thanks to iOS 8 features like extensions and widgets, this is easier than ever.
Bing Translate extension to translate web pages
The Bing Search app has been updated for iOS 8 with a nifty translation extension. Using this feature, you can access a browser like Safari or Chrome, upload a web page, display sharing board and press Bing Translator to translate the entire page into the language of your choice.
First, open the Bing app, tap the . icon List button at the bottom right and select Setting. From Translate to button to select your default language. Now when you tap Bing Translator The page button will be translated into your selected language.
Not-so-great tip: For all the Star Trek novices, the Bing Translator app also has “Klingon” as a language option.
Previously, we told you what extensions are and how to enable them in detail. But here is a summary. After installing the app, pull up sharing boardswipe right and tap Than button in the bottom row. convert Bing Translator to activate it.
iTranslate utility
The free iTranslate app comes with text translation and widget support. To enable voice input and remove ads, you will have to make a $5 in-app purchase. Open the app and tap the icon next to Spanish and select the default language to translate into. Now pull down Notification Center, go to Today view, swipe down and tap Editor. Touch + icon next to iTranslate.
Widgets are now enabled. Now just copy any text to the clipboard, pull down the Notification Center and tap the icon Translate to.. button and the translation will show up right there. You can click Copy to copy text to your clipboard.
Not-so-fun fact: Siri can’t translate. For all its awesomeness, Siri has yet to go that semester abroad. But she had a funny answer ready while we waited.
The Google Translate app for everything Translate
Google Translate has no fancy add-ons or extensions but has the best feature set; it may have the most sophisticated language catalog and it offers premium features for free.
Open the app and enter text, paste or use microphone icon to command it. Select the language you want to translate it to and that’s it. Google Translate will even read the translation aloud so you can avoid confusion when pronouncing unfamiliar words.
Reward: Translator Keyboard
After the fun and efficient keyboard for iOS 8, the translation keyboard has also arrived. Translator Keyboard ($1.99) is a third-party keyboard app that lets you translate between 44 languages right from your keyboard. Just type what you want to translate, slide, select a language and the keyboard will display the translated text that you can easily send anywhere.
