5 Android Keyboard Apps to Add Extra Rows of Numbers

dsc 0646

You’re carrying around a giant 5.7-inch phablet or a 7-10-inch tablet, and you get the same keys as a 4.7-inch Android phone. How is that fair? You have all that extra room.

Think of all the wonderful things you could put in there. Like an extra row of number keys, the arrow keys for super-fast cursor selection, and even the Ctrl/Alt keys for super-fast, super-bold shortcuts! Tablets can even have a split keyboard layout in landscape mode.

Read on to learn how to get them all and more.

1. Hacker’s Keyboard

If you are looking for a free customizable keyboard for your phablet or tablet, look no further. Here are just a few things Hacker’s Keyboard has:

  • The Ctrl and Alt keys for keyboard shortcuts like copy and paste, as well as fast movement when combined with the arrow keys.
  • A full row of numbers, additional arrows, and a full QWERTY keyboard when 5 rows is enabled.
  • The height is adjustable for the keyboard in both portrait and landscape modes.

Hacker’s keyboard isn’t the best when it comes to predictive typing and superior gesture typing. That’s SwiftKey territory. Hacker and other keyboards listed here are for pure typists.

Means people who think it’s better and faster to just type the word themselves than drag your thumb all over the place and then go to the prediction bar and select the word. Not to mention it also messes with your touch typing.

Be careful, if you have any device smaller than 5 inches, don’t even think about enabling the 5-row keyboard. Even with the increased height, typing is still problematic. But the 5-row keyboard is great for both phablets and tablets.

2. Kii . Keyboard

Kind Kii Keyboard: Android warns you about keyboard apps that may record everything you type, including passwords, before enabling third-party keyboards. Kii Keyboard is quick to point out that it’s just a system protocol and that Kii keyboard won’t steal any of your data.

Launch Kii Keyboard (UPDATE: This tool is no longer available) and follow the instructions to enable it. After this, you will see a tutorial.

Kii keyboard is a more civilized version of Hacker keyboard. It gives you all the features of Hacker keyboard but arranged in such a way that you can use it even on small screens. But that also means that Kii isn’t completely free. You need to pay for a $4 in-app purchase to enable important features like the bottom row of arrow keys or the top row of number keys.

Kii keyboard also has a great split view for landscape mode in tablets (this is also a premium feature. Kii lets you use premium features for an hour so you have time to control. Check out the features before you pay.

Detailed Kii Keyboard review is available here.

Pro Tip: Once you have multiple keyboards installed, how do you switch between them? Google’s own keyboard allows you to switch by pressing and holding the spacebar, but what about other keyboards? Of course, there is an app for that. And it’s called Quick Keyboard Switch.

3. Smart Black Keyboard

Smart Black Keyboard (UPDATE: This tool is no longer available) looks like iOS 7’s keyboard with just an extra row of numbers. This free app also has a built-in clipboard, gesture input, and 3000+ emojis.

4. NextApp Keyboard

no Qwerty

Okay NextApp Keyboard incorrectly adds an extra row on top of your keyboard or an arrow at the bottom. It provides the same functionality in a different way. NextApp is built on top of Google’s AOSP (pre-Android L), so you have something familiar to start with.

Nak function

In both portrait and landscape modes, tap Fn button to switch the keyboard to a dedicated layout. Here you have access to the function keys F1-F12 (just like on a computer) and the arrow keys (pointer). There are also insert, delete, home, end, Ctrl, Alt and tab keys.

Best : Hacker’s Keyboard and NextApp Keyboard

Hacker’s Keyboard is for people with large phones who want everything on one screen.

NextApp is for people with small or large phones who want the same arrow keys and Ctrl/tab keys but don’t want to mess up the default keyboard layout.
