VLC media player has been a longtime partner in the game for playing media files on the computer seamlessly. And the Android app is no slouch with tons of features. But then what about the idea of streaming media files from your Windows computer to your Android device?
Sounds interesting right? It is, really. Sure, desktop systems have a lot of media files compared to smartphones, and keeping both systems in sync will be a huge task. So the business of streaming media directly from a Windows PC to a phone seems more appropriate.
So without further ado, let’s get started.
Prerequisites
- Both devices need to connect to the same network.
- Make sure that the necessary settings in the Firewall are set up for the seamless flow of media items between the two devices.
#first. Enable background play in the app
Apparently, enabling background play allows you to listen to songs in the background. Since we are talking about media items in this post, i.e. both audio and video, it is imperative to enable this option. After all, you wouldn’t want your favorite song to stop halfway when you hit the home button, would you?
Go to VLC settings and check Play video in the background box.
#2. Start sharing HomeGroup
Next is an image of the Windows system. This process uses Windows’ HomeGroup sharing feature. So just in case a homegroup isn’t set up yet, create one by clicking Create a homegroup button.
Once there, check media options like music and video and continue by clicking Next and Finish (in the next window).
Homegroup sharing is found in Network and Internet settings. Alternatively, you can search for it directly in the settings.

#3. cancel-Allow other vehicles
Once the setup is complete, return to the main team page. Here, you need to prevent other media like TV from streaming the PC’s content.
So click on the box titled Allow all devices on this network, such as TVs and game consoles, to play my shared content and uncheck Allow box.

#4. Select Local Area Network
Windows setup is complete. All you need to do is go to VLC settings on your smartphone and tap on Local Network. If everything is set up properly, you should see a folder with the name of your computer.
Touch it and select the folders containing music and video files and enjoy the video comfortably on your Android smartphone.
Please note that video or song files must be located in the default Music or Videos folders on your Windows PC.

It’s a wrap!
So that’s how you can easily play video files or listen to songs stored in your PC. See, I told you it was as simple as 1-2-3. Sure, in the days of streaming, the manual work seems a bit overkill, but trust me, when I say it’s worth every bit of it. And if you’re a VLC fan like I am, I bet you’ll find this idea a bit of a charm as I did.
