Boot Multiple Operating Systems From a Single USB Pen Drive

Previously, on Guiding Tech, we covered how you can create a bootable USB drive for Windows 7, Windows 8 and AVG rescue disks. In all those methods, we used different tools to create the bootable drive, and it was a USB pen drive for each of those operating systems. Today, I will tell you about an interesting tool called YUMI that will help you create a multi-boot USB pen drive, meaning you can boot multiple operating systems from a single USB pen drive.

YUMI is like the mother of all bootable USB creation tools. With YUMI you can create multiple bootable pen drives with several Linux distributions, Windows operating systems and many other bootable tools such as antivirus rescue discs and cleaning tools. That’s not all, YUMI will create a bootable disk with a menu to help you choose distributions easily at boot time.

So let’s see how you create a multi-boot pen drive with YUMI.

Create a Multi-Boot USB Drive with YUMI

Step 1: Plug the USB drive that you want to make bootable into your computer.

Step 2: Download and run the YUMI portable tool with administrative rights. The tool will ask you to agree to some terms and conditions before starting. YUMI’s interface is self-explanatory. Just select the drive letter of the USB drive you plugged in and select the type of bootable USB drive you want to create. You should back up all important data from the USB drive and check the option drive format to completely clean the drive before starting.

Step 3: If your desired distro is not on the list, scroll down to choose to try the non-public ISO. I tried that option for Windows 8 and it worked. If the ISO of a particular operating system or tool is not available on your computer, YUMI will provide you with a download link from which you can download the content. Just choose the option Download ISO. If you already have the ISO in your hard drive, browse for it and press the . button Create button.

After the tool is done with the current ISO, it will ask if you want to add other distributions to your USB drive. Just remember to uncheck the format option before you move on to the next ISO. Repeat the process to add a sequential boot image to your USB drive.

Now when you reboot your computer and choose to boot from USB device in the BIOS boot option, the YUMI boot menu will load with a list of all available operating systems that you can boot from the USB drive.

YUMI makes creating a multi-boot USB pen drive very simple with many distributions and system tools, all you need is a pen drive that can hold all of these. That shouldn’t be a concern when you get pen drives from 1GB to 32GB (maybe more) these days.

So how do you like YUMI? Useful, right?
