Inappropriate colors can ruin the perfect mood of a photo. Maybe the color of your shirt didn’t suit your partner and now you want to change the color before sending it out for a large print to hang at home. Adobe Photoshop helps you to change the color of an object in a few clicks. Here’s how to modify the color of an object in Photoshop.
You don’t need to be a Photoshop wizard to change the color of an object. The whole process is surprisingly easy on your PC or Mac. We’ll go over two methods and introduce some examples to change the color of an object in Photoshop. Start.
1. Using the Object Selection Tool
Selecting an object from the rest of an image is exhausting. That often causes frequent users to give up. After Photoshop v21, Adobe brought the Object Selection Tool to select objects in the image. Here’s how you can do it.
Step 1: Open Photoshop on your PC or Mac. Make sure your machine meets the minimum Photoshop requirements. Otherwise, you will feel Photoshop lag.
Step 2: Select the Select Object tool from the menu bar on the left.
Step 3: The object selection tool appears. Now draw a box around the object that you want to change color.
Note: For best selection results, you should draw a tight box around the subject in the image. Don’t make a much larger box or a small box or Photoshop won’t be able to apply the magic.
Step 4: We tried Photoshop’s Select Object tool on a complex object like a Rose with too many curves. And we have to admit, Photoshop has done a great job of detecting edges.
If drawing a box around an object doesn’t help you detect the proper edges, you can hover your pointer over the object and Photoshop will provide a preview of the object to select from.
Step 5: After you select an object, open the Layers menu from the top.
Step 6: Select New Adjustment Layer.
Step 7: Open the Hue/Saturation menu and give the layer a name.
Step 8: From the menu on the right, you have the properties menu.
Step 9: Play with the Hue slider until you are satisfied with a new color.
Step 10: You can also adjust saturation and brightness from the same menu.
Check out the live preview and it’s ready for export.
You can also change the color of the object using the Replace Color option. Let’s explore that together.
2. Use the Replace Color function
When playing with a simple object of one color, you can change the color using the Replace Color function.
This trick is also useful when you want to change a specific color of an object. Here’s what you need to do.
Step 1: Open Photoshop and import the image into the software.
Step 2: Select Image from the menu bar.
Step 3: Go to the Adjustments menu and choose Replace Color.
Step 4: A Replace Color menu will pop up.
Step 5: Select a color from the object that you want to change.
Step 6: Select the resulting Color from the same menu.
Step 7: After you select the Result color, the color selection menu will appear. Photoshop shows you the current and new colors from said menu.
When you interact with the color slider, you’ll see a live preview of the changed color for the object. Repeat the process for other colors in the object and make changes until you are ready to export the final image.
Before perfecting the color, you can try with Hue, Saturation and Lightness alternate colors.
Press the Ctrl + Alt + Shift + W keys and open the Export menu. You can adjust the image size, change the resolution, etc before exporting it to the desired location on your PC.
If you want to refine the image further, you can save it as a PSD file.
