Young Dolph, real name Adolph Robert Thornton Junior, well known on stage as Young Dolph was born on July 27th 1985 in Chicago, Illinois. Young Dolph shares the same parents with his two other siblings and he is also a second cousin to the late rapper, Juice Wrld. Young Dolph moved to Memphis, Tennessee with his family when he was just two-years-old.

Early Life

Young Dolph spent most of his early life with his grandmother, Idae Mae who raised him. His parents were addicted to crack cocaine and he would only see them in just few weeks. According to the rapper, most of his peers in South Memphis were being raised by their grandmothers due to the issues most of the faced with their biological parents. However, Young Dolph described his grandmother as the meanest person on earth on the account that most of the thing she thought him as a child, he got to experience them when he was at age 15. He said that he started utilizing her teachings at age 15 and that was how he learnt to be independent.

Young Dolph’s grandmother never allowed him have his friends visit them at home but on occasions, he allowed homeless people to stay with their family. His grandmother passed away after battling with lung cancer on March 5th 2008. Young Dolph attended the Hamilton High School as a teenager.

Career

Young Dolph released his debut mixtape, Paper Route Campaign, in 2008 after receiving encouragement from his pals. He made the decision to devote himself totally to rap after realizing its popularity in his area. Two years later, he formally founded his independent record label Paper Route Empire 2010. That same year, he also released his debut mainstream mixtape Welcome 2 Dolph World, which was hosted by Atlanta DJ DJ Scream and featured artists 8Ball & MJG, 2 Chainz (then known as Tity Boi), Tim Gates, and Money Makkin Murda from the label. On April 12 and November 14, respectively, in 2012, Young Dolph released the mixtapes A Time 2 Kill and Blue Magic. The titles of the first and second were both influenced by the films American Gangster and the one with the same name. Young Dolph’s collaboration mixtape EastAtlantaMemphis, featuring Young Scooter and Big Bank Black, was released on March 15, 2013, following a number of team-ups and a personal bond with Atlanta trap musician Gucci Mane. Trappin’ Out a Mansion, the third album in the High-Class Street Music trilogy, was made available on May 13, 2013. South Memphis Kingpin, by Young Dolph, was released on October 15, 2013, and quickly became a hit. Dolph released Cross Country Trappin on April 15, 2014.

Young Dolph’s American Gangster, the fourth entry in the High-ClassClass Street Music series, was made available on July 8, 2014. This mixtape featured Gucci Mane, 2 Chainz, Fiend, Trinidad James, Shy Glizzy, Trae tha Truth, Problem, and Cap 1 in addition to the song “Preach,” which gained widespread acclaim. King of Memphis, his first studio album, was published in 2016 and reached a top position of 49 on the Billboard 200 chart. He was a part of the successful song “Cut It” by O.T. Genasis, which peaked at number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Rich Slave, Young Dolph’s seventh album, debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 upon release in 2020 and quickly rose to the top of the charts. He was shot and died in Memphis, Tennessee, on November 17, 2021.

Personal Life

Young Dolph was attached to Mia Jaye and had two children with her. He claimed that because of his upbringing with his grandmother, he was a little bit tough with his children. Rapper Key Glock and fellow rapper Juice Wrld were both frequent collaborators for Thornton, who was also a distant relative of the latter. In 2017, Thornton discovered this tie. On September 26, 2017, Thornton was shot outside a business in Hollywood, Los Angeles. He was admitted to the hospital in critical condition, but after a few hours, the doctors said he was expected to survive. He was hospitalized for two weeks as he recovered from three bullet wounds. Moments after the shooting, Yo Gotti was first listed as a person of interest but was later exonerated. Corey McClendon, a buddy of Yo Gotti, was initially detained on suspicion of attempted murder but was later released without being charged.

Thornton started spending more time with his family in Memphis during the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020 while doing so amid rumors of retirement. He was well-known in the region for his philanthropy, giving $25,000 to his high school, Hamilton, and inspiring kids with his speeches. Days before his passing, Thornton, who was well-known for giving free Thanksgiving feasts, donated 200 turkeys to patients at the West Cancer Center and had more dinners planned for days later.

Cause Of His Death

While purchasing cookies for his mother at Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies, a bakery he usually frequented whenever he was home, on November 17, 2021, Young Dolph was tragically murdered in Memphis. He was killed by two gunmen driving a white Mercedes-Benz two-door. Thornton suffered 22 gunshot wounds, including bullet exits, according to an autopsy. The back and forehead both received a few cuts. For hours, large crowds of hundreds of people flocked the scene of Thornton’s death; police had to barricade the area while they conducted an investigation. In response, Memphis councilman J. B. Smiley and Tennessee House Representative London Lamar called for a curfew in Memphis to stop rioting and bloodshed.

His funeral took place on November 30, 2021. First Baptist Church Broad Street had a service. Security and Memphis Police accompanied the family’s convoy of black SUVs to the graveyard next to Young Dolph’s high school, Hamilton High School.

Justin Johnson, one of the main suspects of the tragedy that befell the rapper was identified and issued with a first degree murder warrant. The Tennessee authorities placed a bounty of $15,000 on the suspect for anyone who could provide valuable information. The suspect was also said to have a record of criminal history. On January 11, a different suspect, 32-year-old Cornelius Smith, who was detained for stealing the vehicle used in Dolph’s assassination, was charged with first-degree murder, possessing illegal firearms, and theft.
