Sinbad attended Benton Harbor High School and graduated in 1974. He went to college from 1974 to 1978 at the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado, where he lettered two se asons for the basketball team.
Officially known as David Adkins, he worked under the professional name Sinbad in order to stand out in the entertainment industry. He began his stand-up comedy career appearing on Star Search where he won his round against fellow comedian Dennis Miller and made it all the way to the finals before losing to John Kassir.

A few months later, he was cast on The Redd Foxx Show, a short-lived sitcom, playing Byron Lightfoot. He has starred in the films Necessary Roughness, Houseguest, First Kid, Jingle All the Way, Good Burger, and Planes.
He became famous in the 1990s for his role on his own HBO specials, appearing on several television series such as Coach Walter Oakes in A Different World and as David Bryan on The Sinbad Show.
Sinbad suffered a stroke. According to reports, this illness occurred as a result of a blood clot traveling from his heart to his brain. In a statement by his family, after suffering a stroke, Sinbad is now learning how to walk at age 66.
