Houston made the first of Drexler’s two straight Final Four appearances in 1982, only losing out to event champions North Carolina. During that season, Drexler averaged 15.2 points and 10.5 rebounds (second in the Southwest Conference) per game as a small forward as Houston finished 25–8.

As a junior, Drexler was declared eligible for the NBA draft. He was selected 1st round, 14th overall pick by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1983 NBA draft. Over the three seasons he played in college, he left Houston with career averages of 14.4 points, 3.3 assists and 9.9 rebounds.

Drexler did not make a mark in his rookie season. He only managed 7.7 points in 17.2 minutes per game on average. His second season was bettered as he played more minutes and averaged 17.2 points, 6 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.2 steals per game.

Drexler made his first All-Star team in his third season. A lot improved and his influence was felt the more on the court as he averaged 18.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, 8 assists and 2.6 steals before hitting a career-high 50 points over the Sacramento Kings in a double-overtime on January 6, 1989.

After 12 seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers, Drexler pleaded to be traded to a serious contender for the championship. His desire was approved and he made his way to Houston Rockets on February 14, 1995. He spent three seasons with the Rockets, winning the championship in his first season.
