Beard attended Breckingridge County High School, where he played basketball as a junior. During his time, he led the Bearcats to the 1964 state championship game losing to Loisville Seneca team led by Wes Unseld. He later sent the Bearcats to the title game again, and the won the state championship in 1965.
After high school, he enrolled to the University of Louisville, where he became roommates with Wes. He played college basketball and made a name for himself with his good performances. In the 1969 ABA draft, Beard was selected by the Dallas Chaparrals and by the Atlanta Hawks in the first round, 10th overall pick of the 1969 NBA draft.
Butch Beard professional career lasted only nine seasons. In that time, he played five teams; the Atlanta Hawks, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Seattle SuperSonics, the Golden State Warriors, and the New York Knicks.
Butch scored 5,622 career points and represented Cleveland in the 1972 NBA All-Star Game. During his time with the Warriors, he scored the last seven points of the team’s 1975 NBA Championship win. Beard retired as an NBA player in 1979, last playing for the New York Knicks.
