Microsoft’s Windows Terminal is a multi-tabbed command-line interface that replaces Windows Console. It is pre-configured to run PowerShell, Command Prompt, SSH, WSL, and Azure Cloud Shell Connector, and it can do so using separate tabs. However, you can customize the Windows Terminal to suit your preferences.
There are many customization options that you may apply, and in this guide, we show you some of our most preferred modifications. So, launch the Windows Terminal on Windows 11 PC, and let’s get to it.
1. Customizing Windows Terminal’s Default Profile
When you launch the Windows Terminal, it will start with the command-line profile by default. However, you may choose the open profile when you click the plus button. The choices are between Windows PowerShell, Command Prompt, Azure Cloud Shell, and Ubuntu.
Step 1: Launch the Windows Terminal on your computer.
Step 2: Open the Terminal settings by clicking the little downward pointing arrow next to the plus button at the top of the Windows Terminal and select Settings.
Step 3: Click Startup on the right pane, click the Default profile’s dropdown menu to choose from any profile options, and click Save.
Step 4: Optionally, you may click on the plus sign after launching Windows Terminal and select a profile from the available options.
2. Changing the Terminal Theme on Windows 11
Windows Terminal has several pre-defined themes. By default, it has a Dark theme that uses a dark background, which is easier on the eye. There is also a light theme that uses light and brighter colors. But you may also try the option to ‘Use Windows theme.’ Here is how to select a theme.
Step 1: Launch the Windows Terminal on your computer.
Step 2: Click the downward arrow next to the Plus button at the top of the Windows Terminal and select Settings.
Step 3: On the Appearance left pane option, on the right, select a Theme using the Application Theme dropdown menu.
Step 4: Click the Save button at the bottom after you select a theme.
3. Applying Acrylic Effects
On Windows Terminal, acrylic effects will make the Terminal windows appear translucent with other windows or your desktop wallpaper visible. You will need to update Windows Terminal before you can perform this customization.
Step 1: Click the Windows Search (magnifying lens) icon on the Taskbar, type Microsoft Store, and click the Microsoft Store application.
Step 2: Click the magnifying lens, type Windows Terminal, and hit Enter. Then click the Update button, but if there is no Update button like in the image below, click open and proceed to the next step.
Step 2: Click the little downward pointing arrow next to the Plus button at the top of the Windows 11 Terminal and select Settings.
Step 3: Under the Profiles menu on the left pane, click Windows PowerShell, then click Appearance on the left.
Step 4: Scroll to the Transparency section and toggle on Enable acrylic material. You may also choose a Background opacity using the slider.
Step 5: Click on Save.
Step 6: Repeat steps 3 to 5 for using other profiles, and you should get a slightly transparent Terminal when you click the plus button.
4. Install and Change Windows Terminal Fonts
Windows 11 Terminal has some default font options, including font face, weight, size, and ligature. You may, however, install new fonts and adjust Windows Terminal settings for the fonts. You should add new fonts, as you will regularly add them to Windows 11, then try customizing the font options as shown below.
Step 1: Click the little downward pointing arrow next to the Plus button at the top of the Windows 11 Terminal and select Settings.
Step 2: Under the Profiles menu on the left pane, click Windows PowerShell, then click Appearance on the left.
Step 3: Under the Text menu on the right pane, expand the Font face dropdown menu click on the new font, then click Save.
Step 4: Optionally, you may also click Font weight and select options for font thickness from its dropdown menu or change the size of the font by choosing a size from the Font size menu.
5. Customize the Windows Terminal Icon
Terminal icons may be used to identify your different profiles. By default, all profiles on the Windows 11 Terminal have pre-defined icons, but these may be changed to any other pictures you prefer by following the steps below.
Step 1: Click the little downward pointing arrow next to the Plus button at the top of the Windows 11 Terminal and select Settings.
Step 2: Under the Profiles menu on the left pane, click Windows PowerShell, click the little arrow to expand icon options, and click the Browse button.
Step 3: Navigate to the new icon location and click Open.
Step 4: Click Save.
Step 5: Repeat steps 2 and 4 for any other profiles you need to change.
6. Windows Terminal Background Color Customization
Windows 11 comes with a default black background. However, changing this color is possible, especially if you prefer something more aesthetically pleasing. Follow the steps below.
Step 1: Click the little downward pointing arrow next to the Plus button at the top of the Windows 11 Terminal and select Settings.
Step 2: Under the Profiles menu on the left pane, click Windows PowerShell, click the little arrow to expand the Background image path, and click the Browse button.
Step 3: Navigate to the new icon location and click Open.
Step 4: Click Save.
Step 5: Repeat steps 2 and 4 for any other profiles you need to change.
Creating Custom Windows Terminals
