7 Annoying Features of iOS 8 And How To Fix Them

Extensions

For the most part iOS 8 is great. There are extensions, widgets, and lots of small features and upgrades scattered throughout the operating system. While many of them are good, some can be annoying. If recent contacts float in In the App Switcher or your home iPad receiving calls is bothering you, we’ve got the solution.

1. Remove Recent Contacts from In-App Switcher

With iOS 8, Apple integrated recent and favorite contacts on top of the app switcher. So now whenever you double tap the home button they will be there. All. Single. Time.

This is not only annoying, but also distracting over time. Thankfully, there is a way to disable this. Go Setting -> Mail, Contacts, Calendar -> Show in App Switcher and turn it off.

2. Turn off iCloud Drive

In case you missed our memo about not activating iCloud Drive when updating to iOS 8, here’s the update. iCloud Drive is only compatible with iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite. If you have a Mac running Mavericks or an iOS device that can’t get updates, turning on iCloud Drive will disable cloud access for those devices.

If you want to turn it off now, go to Settings -> iCloud And off iCloud drive.

3. Turn off QuickType Prediction

Apple’s new QuickType predictor is cute. Everyone on Twitter has turn it into a game, use only QuickType hints to create sentences. Sometimes they make sense, sometimes they don’t. Most of them are hilarious.

The problem is that QuickType’s predictions, as they are, aren’t the best. And if you’re familiar with iOS 8’s autocorrect, you might want to turn off prediction.

Go Setting -> overview -> keyboard and turn predict option off. Alternatively, touch and hold the . button Sphere keyboard icon on and off predict select.

4. Disable auto-cancellation messages

Messages is going the Snapchat route and making voice and video messages self-destruct by default. You will have to tap the “Keep” option for each message to save it. If you exchange a lot of media that you want to save, this can become a chore.

Go Setting -> Messages-> Video Messages And change Expired option to Never. Then from Keep the message selection Forever.

6. Use banners instead of alerts for messages

When you receive a message or iMessage on iOS 8, you can pull down the notification banner to quickly reply to it. If you’re using Alerts instead of banners, you’ll get the same functionality, just a little bit buggy. If you get another message while replying in the alert box, the message will disappear completely and you’ll need to start over.

Switch to Banners from warning for Messages to fix this behavior.

7. Enable/Disable Handoff between iPhone and iPad

While the Continuity and Handoff features won’t arrive on the Mac until the end of October, they can be used between iPad and iPhone. If you’re running iOS 8 on both devices, they’ll be enabled by default. But some users are reporting that is not the case.

Also, if your iPad is shared with your family, you may want to disable the Handoff feature entirely.

So go to Setting -> overview -> Handovers & Recommended Applications to turn on/off Hand.
