A 50-megapixel or 108-megapixel camera has become the norm on Android smartphones. Although smartphone companies use pixel binning for better results and to reduce image sizes, you still get images that weigh several MB. Such a large image is useful if you want to make a print. But when you use the same on any web service, it will ask you to upload an image in small size. Here are the top ways to reduce photo size on Android.
The situation is even worse when you take pictures with full resolution. Your 108MP camera will take pictures that are about 25MB – 27MB in size. It is not convenient to share such large images via WhatsApp or Gmail. Instead, you can compress the photo and share/upload it without any problem.
1. Reduce image size with Gallery app (Samsung)
The default Gallery app on Galaxy phones is full of features. You can edit media files, create collages, organize images, and even resize them. Follow the steps below to reduce the photo size using the Gallery app on your Galaxy phone. For this post, we will resize the image to modify the resolution and reduce the size.
Step 1: Open the Gallery app on your Samsung phone.
Step 2: Open an image that you want to compress.
Step 3: Tap the three-dot menu in the bottom right corner and select Details to check the current image size.
Step 4: Select the edit button at the bottom to open the photo editor.
Step 5: Tap the three-dot menu in the bottom right corner and select Resize.
Step 6: You can reduce the image size to 20%, 40%, 60% or 80%.
Step 7: Tap the radio button next to your preferred size and tap Done.
Step 8: Press the Save button in the top right corner and check the reduced image size (refer to the steps above).
Samsung users don’t need any third party apps to resize images. Others can try a few alternatives from the Google Play Store to reduce the image size.
2. Compress image size
‘Compress image size’ is an effective tool to reduce image size on the go. Go through the steps below to make changes.
Step 1: Download and install ‘Compress Image Size’ from Play Store.
Step 2: Open the app and select a photo.
Step 3: You can check the original image size. Turn on the Quality toggle and use the slider to reduce the image size.
Step 4: Alternatively, you can enter the compressed file size and press the Compress button.
Step 5: Wait for a while and your compressed image is ready to share. You can check the reduced image size from the same menu.
However, it will not change the original image resolution. The app is free to download and use. Image size compression is only suitable for reducing the size of one or two images. It does not support batch processing. If you want to compress multiple photos at once, try the Photo Compressor app.

Step 2: Open the default gallery app on your Android and select the images you want to compress.
Step 3: Share the image with your WhatsApp group.
Step 4: Open your personal group on WhatsApp and select the same image.
Step 5: Tap the three-dot menu at the top and select Save.
For example, we shared a 4.8 MB photo on WhatsApp and downloaded the same 64 KB photo from the group.
Compress image size on Android
