Turning on or off silent mode on iPhone is very simple. Just move the mute/ringer switch on the side of your iPhone up or down. But what if the silent switch doesn’t work? While you can try these fixes, it would be wiser to know how to enable or disable silent mode on your iPhone without a toggle.
Knowing the alternatives is always better, so don’t miss this article even if your mute switch is working perfectly. After all, you will learn all the possible ways to turn off silent mode if your iPhone is malfunctioning. Let’s get started!
1. Mute iPhone without switching to AssistiveTouch
Step 1: Launch Settings and go to Accessibility.
Step 2: Select Tap.
Step 3: Tap AssistiveTouch and turn on AssistiveTouch.
Step 4: Here you can choose,
- ‘Customize Top Level Menu’ → select any action and replace it with Mute → Tap Done.
- Single tap/ Double tap/ Long press in Custom Actions → select Mute → return to main menu.
Step 5: Now, depending on your selection above, you can tap the AssistiveTouch button to select Mute.
Contrary to its usefulness, most users (including us) don’t like AssistiveTouch floating on their screen all the time. It especially disrupted our viewing experience. Thankfully, you can turn AssistiveTouch on/off whenever you need to.
How to hide or unhide AssistiveTouch on iPhone
1. Via Siri
Ironically, while Siri can’t help you turn silent mode on/off on your iPhone, it can turn AssistiveTouch on and off with a single command. Call up Siri and ask it to turn AssistiveTouch on or off and it will follow the instructions a lot.
2. Via accessibility shortcut
Step 1: Go to Settings → Accessibility.
Step 2: Scroll down and select Accessibility Shortcut.
Step 3: Tap AssistiveTouch.
Step 4: If prompted, tap Continue.
Now, whenever you triple-tap the side button on your iPhone, AssistiveTouch will appear and disappear. Therefore, you can enable or disable silent mode by calling AssistiveTouch and hiding it after completing the task.
Tip: If you’re also having problems with AssistiveTouch, try these fixes to get AssistiveTouch working on your iPhone.
2. Use Press Back to Enable or Disable Silent Mode on iPhone
Introduced with iOS 14, Back Tap is another great accessibility feature for triggering predefined actions, including putting your iPhone on silent without a button.
However, before we continue, please note that this feature is only available for iPhone 8 and later.
Step 1: Launch Settings → Accessibility → Tap.
Step 2: Scroll down and select Back Tap.
Step 3: Choose Double Tap or Triple Tap.
Step 4: From the options, select Mute.
Once the action is set, double-tap or triple-tap the back of your iPhone (around the Apple logo).
Notably, you can even use Back Tap as a trigger for Accessibility Shortcuts and enable/disable iPhone ringer with AssistiveTouch. If for some reason your Back Tap isn’t working as it should, check out our guide to Back Tap fix.
3. Use Spotlight to Put iPhone in Silent Mode
While Focus doesn’t directly mute iPhone, it can mute all notifications. So for all cases and purposes you can call mute-like mode with Custom Focus.
However, Focus will mute all notifications, meaning your iPhone won’t vibrate. So it is likely that you will miss the notifications. Overall, it can be great for a meeting or for me time, but not suitable for an all-day scenario.
Setting the Focus Mode to Mute
Step 1: Launch Settings → Spotlight.
Step 2: Press + and then Customize.
Step 3: Enter a Spotlight name and press Next.
Step 4: Click Customize focus.
Step 5: In the next window, select Allow notifications from → deselect all existing contacts → tap Next.
Step 6: Select Only authorized people then Done.
Step 7: In the apps section, tick Allow notifications from, uncheck all existing apps and tap Done.
Step 8: On the Spotlight page, make sure that the People and Apps section says Unauthorized.
Step 9: To completely mute the phone using Focus,
- Tap People and turn off Allow repeat calls.
- Tap Apps and turn off Time Sensitive Notifications.
Turn on the mute focus mode
Step 1: Launch Control Center,
- For iPhones with Face ID: Swipe down from the top right corner of the screen.
- For iPhones with Touch ID: Swipe up from the bottom edge of any screen.
Step 2: Press and hold Focus to open the Focus menu.
Step 3: Select the Focus silent mode you created.
To unmute your iPhone, repeat the steps above to disable Focus mode. Remember, as long as Spotlight is active, you won’t be able to unmute notifications and turn iPhone using any other method.
And while there are some downsides to using Focus to mute your iPhone, there are also some advantages. For example, you can automatically enable Spotlight, depending on the time, location, and application.
Furthermore, you can also use Spotlight Status to notify your friends, family and other callers that you have muted all notifications.
frequently asked Questions

Thankfully yes, the first two methods i.e. AssistiveTouch and Back Tap can disable silent mode on iPhone even with the mute switch on or stuck/broken at the mute setting.
2. Can you mute iPhone using the volume buttons or the volume slider in Settings?
Unfortunately no, the volume down button, or the volume slider in Settings → Sounds & Haptics, cannot mute or unmute iPhone. Although if you just need to lower the volume, it works great as this feature can reduce the volume to a minimum.
3. How to put iPhone in silent mode without vibration?
Launch Settings → Sounds & Haptics (Sounds if you’re using iPhone 6 or earlier) → scroll down to the Ring/Silent Mode switch. Here, turn off ‘Play Haptics in Silent Mode’) to disable vibration when iPhone is in silent mode.
Sometimes, Apple cares about the smallest details. Although, on the other hand, it completely misses the point. Funny how you can ask Siri to hang up a call, but can’t ask her to turn on/off the iPhone ringer? It’s weird.
