How to Create a Poll on Telegram

While instant messaging apps like Telegram make it easy to connect with friends and family across the globe, they also leave room for misinformation. Because individuals are geographically distant, the benefits derived from face-to-face communication are no longer enjoyed. One example of the benefits of physical communication is the ability to see individuals’ expressions when they talk.

One way to reduce misinformation on instant messaging apps like Telegram is through polls. Polls are useful in group settings and can restrict a conversation’s topics or responses to defined groups. Here’s how to create a Telegram poll.

Use poll creation in a group

In the Telegram Group chat, there is a feature to create a poll. Telegram users can access this feature on PC, Android or iPhone. Here is how it works.

Step 1: Launch Telegram app on your phone.

Step 2: Depending on the device, tap or click the group for which you want to run the poll by tapping it.

Step 3: Tap the Paperclip icon in the lower left corner of your device screen.

When using a PC, instead of clicking the paperclip icon, click the three vertical dots in the top right corner of the screen.

Step 4: Select Poll from the submenu.

Step 5: In the New Poll window and In the Question field, enter your question.

Step 6: In the field named Poll Options, enter your answer choices.

When you fill in the Poll Options, Telegram will automatically create new fields. However, users can only add 10 poll options at a time.

Step 7: To allow users to vote anonymously in a poll, tap the toggle or tick the checkbox for Vote Anonymously.

Step 8: To allow multiple replies, tap the toggle or tick the checkbox for Multiple replies.

Step 9: To allow only one correct answer in a Poll, tap the toggle or tick the checkbox for Quiz Mode.

A poll cannot simultaneously activate options for Multiple Responses and Question Mode. In addition, when Quiz Mode is activated, the user will receive an additional poll field to provide Explanation to team members who choose the wrong answer.

Step 10: Click Submit or Create to take the poll online.

Use a Poll Bot

An alternative to using group polls is the Telegram poll bot. There are several bots that probe on Telegram. However, for this tutorial we will be using @PollBot. PollBot runs through a script built by a third-party Telegram developer to generate polls. Here’s how to use it:

Step 1: Launch Telegram app on your phone.

Step 2: Place your cursor in the Search field and search for PollBot.

Step 3: Click Show more if the displayed results do not contain PollBot.

Step 4: Click PollBot from the results.

Step 5: Activate the bot by clicking Start.

Step 6: On the PollBot chat window, click on the image displayed.

When using a PC, click the three vertical dots in the top right corner of the screen instead of clicking the image shown.

Step 7: Click on the three horizontal dots and select Add to group.

Step 8: In the Search window, enter your team name to display. Click on your group and you’ll get a notification from PollBot that it’s been added.

Step 9: Click on the group chat you selected to add the bot to open the window.

Step 10: From the chat window select /newpoll or in the text bar type /[email protected]

Step 11: PollBot will provide instructions for setting up your question along with poll options. Note that you can still add up to ten options to a poll.

Step 12: Type /done once you’ve finished setting up your poll. The poll is live and prompts the user to provide an answer to your poll.

Poll Feature vs. PollBot

The difference between PollBot and the built-in Telegram poll lies in the possibilities. Using bots, you can share links to your polls and attach media files in group chats or channels. However, Telegram’s built-in polling feature does not have additional options. In addition, you can create polls on channels. Telegram channels are different from groups and you can run concurrent polls for different user groups.
