3 Instagram Layout Tips for Awesome Photo Collages

Instagram collages are really popular. I see many collage posts from my friends throughout the day. It makes sense, doesn’t it? You go to a party, meet friends, you’ve liked, 100 selfies. Five of them are really good. Of course, you want to share them with your Instagram followers. But come on, you wouldn’t post 5 selfies in a row either. You’re not that self-obsessed.

So you get the first collage app you find from the App Store, grab the top 5 photos, arrange them a little better, and edit the layout. If you don’t like how the first app does it, try another and that’s it.

You’ll be happy to know that there’s a better way to do all of this right now. And it is blessed by the Instagram lords. Layout is the free app (currently iOS only) from Instagram to create stunning collages.

It seems simple, but this application can do a lot of things. So let’s break down the appropriate photo collage art.

1. Complete 5 collages

5 photo collage is my favorite. 3 is too low, 4 is boring, 6 is crowded. The 5-picture collage also makes some interesting combinations. You have plenty of room to play with.

In Layout, you first start by selecting an image and then choosing a layout. It’s all done on one screen, and when you select images, they’ll spread accordingly in the collage thumbnail above. Choose 5 images to get started.

You will see previews for about a dozen layouts with 5 images. This is the great thing about Layouts. It gives you a preview right there. Try dragging down from the split point for a better view. In this case, you can choose the first or second option.

Once you’ve chosen the layout, you’re free to drag and move things around, confined to the grid. You can replace images, drag an image to another box to disable them, etc.

Dragging inside the image box will allow you to rotate the image around. And tapping and holding one of the edges brings up the resize tool. This will allow you to freely resize the image. Again, limited to the grid.

2. Discover amazing mirror collages

The layout designers made a conscious decision to not include borders of any kind in the application. And it paid off a lot. Anyway, I hate borders. They take up space in the already small image you’re trying to cram so much into.

One side effect of not being contoured is creating a fun, nimble and dare I say – hip effect using Mirror And Flip tools.

To get started, just select 1 photo. Tap the corresponding layout – depending on whether you want to create a horizontal or vertical flip effect. Then tap one of the images and tap Mirror or Flip. Flip turn the image upside down and Mirror Flip the image to the side. Rotate the image around for a nice effect.

You can make this even more interesting by removing the symmetry from the equation. When you’re talking about splitting the image by 50% and flipping it around, most of the images will look good.

If you want a challenge, choose a layout that isn’t asymmetrical at all. You may not get anything interesting on the first try, but the effort will pay off in the long run.

3. Create a simple collage quickly

The great thing about Layout is that it’s simple yet complete. If you spend a few minutes in the app, you’ll be amazed at what you can come up with.

But at the same time, you can simply jump into the app, select your image, tap the layout you like, then tap the icon Instagram button to send it. Yup, it can also be quick and easy.

What will you come to?

I think Layout is one of the best collage apps out there. Even though it’s limited by Instagram’s constraints (e.g. square layout only), you can still create great images with it, faster and better than any other app.
