Google Spreadsheets (now known as Sheets as part of the Google Drive productivity suite) is becoming a real competitor to MS Excel. The amount of work that Excel can do is truly amazing. But Sheets is catching up. More importantly, it beats Excel by integrating add-ons and scripts in an easy-to-use manner. There is also a long list of functions for quick calculations.
Using Google Sheets for serious work means dealing with a serious amount of data. Data is often not sorted or organized. In times like these, you want an easy way to eliminate duplicate data entries. And let’s face it, manually searching and deleting tuples periodically is imprecise and time-consuming.
Thanks to Sheet’s support for add-ons and functions, the process can be done in just a few seconds.
Remove Duplicate Widget
Last time, we talked about some cool Google Docs add-ons for writers. The Remove Duplicate utility can be installed directly from the spreadsheet view. From add-ons select menu Get add-ons. Search Remove duplicates and install it. In a few seconds, the add-on will be ready to go.
Once installed, select the cells in question and go to add-ons -> Remove duplicates. This will bring up a multi-step pop-up menu in which your selection will be taken into account.
In the next step, you can choose if you want to find duplicates or unique.
You can now choose to mark the duplicates with the color you like. From here, you can also ask the add-on to remove such issues directly.
The add-on will take a few seconds and then show you its findings.
While the add-on works well when you only use one row, it becomes difficult when you try to use multiple rows.
Use unique function
With this method, leave a few rows blank from your data location and enter the “=UNIQUE()” function. After you have opened the parentheses, select the cells you want to filter. You can also select items. Close the parenthesis and press Enter.
You just made a copy of the data you have, just no duplicate values are included. Now delete the previous rows/cells and you’re done.
Do you know of any other methods to quickly remove duplicates from Google Sheets?
