How To Open, Highlight and Annotate PDFs in Chrome

I’ve stated in the past that I don’t like PDF as a format for files in general. But it’s something I can’t get rid of. That’s why I’ve written a lot about how to improve the experience. Today, we’re bringing the PDF experience out of the cloud and PC and directly into the Chrome browser.

Chrome is the most powerful browser out there. So powerful that Google sells laptops called Chromebooks, which basically include a Chrome browser and nothing else.

By using extensions and apps, which even work offline, you can use Chrome to easily view, annotate, print, and export PDFs.

But you should know that these extensions will not replace an official PDF editing application like Foxit Reader. What they will allow you to do is open PDF files, copy text, add text, highlight and annotate PDF files very easily.

Notable PDF is a free Chrome extension that also works offline. You will need to create an account to get started; this will also allow you to use Notable’s cloud storage to save documents and changes.

Click on the remarkable PDF icon from the extension bar to get started. From the next screen, you can drag a PDF file from your computer or select a document saved in Google Drive.

This application is very fast. It’s so fast in fact that sometimes it’s hard to tell if it’s a native Windows app or just a Chrome extension.

Once the PDF is loaded, select a tool from the sidebar.

Here’s an overview of all the things Notable lets you do:

  • Highlight, underline, and strikethrough text with customizable colors
  • Write text anywhere on PDF, change font size and color
  • Highlight text and make comments just like Google Docs

When you’re done, Notable PDF allows you to export a PDF without annotations, with annotations overlaid, or with just a copy of the annotations.

PDF Viewer

If you’re not satisfied with Chrome’s built-in PDF plugin, we’ve shown you how to disable it and force any PDF links to be downloaded to your PC.

Now there’s another, more feature-rich alternative in the form of this PDF Viewer extension.

Pdf . Viewer

Once the extension is installed, all PDF links will open directly with PDF Viewer.

PDF Viewer allows you to easily copy text in a PDF, something the default PDF plugin for Chrome doesn’t allow you to do. For some, that alone makes the PDF Viewer extension worth the download.
