(Trường THPT Trần Hưng Đạo) – According to Dr. Dinh Gia Huy, the shipping and seaport industry in Vietnam is in the development stage, but human resources can only meet about 40% of the demand.
This is information provided by Dr. Dinh Gia Huy – Lecturer at the University of Transport in Ho Chi Minh City said in the Workshop on Human Resources in Port Management and Logistics that took place on the afternoon of October 9.
Vietnam is one of four countries in Southeast Asia that has the potential to develop both infrastructure and infrastructure logistics system (ranked 3rd only after Singapore and Thailand). In which, the whole country has 34 seaports, 296 ports announced for exploitation with a total length of about 96km, throughput capacity of about 750 million tons/year. Two special seaports are Hai Phong seaport and Ba Ria – Vung Tau seaport.
Notably, Ba Ria – Vung Tau is the only locality in Vietnam with 52 port projects, of which 26 projects have been put into operation, with a capacity of about 76.5 million tons/year.
According to the survey, the number of employees serving a seaport in this province ranges from 200-300 people. If 52 port projects are put into operation, human resources specialized in ports will need about 13,000 workers.
“Although the demand for labor suitable to the port industry is very large, however, the human resources of seaports and logistics working at Ba Ria – Vung Tau port are only about 10% of formal training…” – Dr. Huy added.
Human resources in the port and logistics industry in Vietnam are said to have limited knowledge and skills, limited ICT qualifications, and have not kept up with the development progress of world logistics. English proficiency in port and logistics operations is also limited. According to the survey results of the Vietnam Association of Logistics Service Enterprises, only 29% of employees are rated good in IT and foreign languages. Therefore, it is necessary to develop port human resources to match the development and innovation of the system.
Dr. Dinh Gia Huy said that the port is not only a place of transportation, but also used as a warehouse or distribution center, providing value-added services such as labeling, packaging, etc. Ports are increasingly being developed and modernized. , changing in line with the world trade market, along with the combination of 4.0 technology, containerization, other forms of mechanization of cargo handling…
The job requirements of those working at the port have also completely changed to include not only new management techniques and work skills, but also skills in communication systems and current technologies. such as the use of radio communications equipment and computers. Accordingly, port personnel will need much more complex skills and knowledge than they have been required in the past.
The growth rate of the logistics industry in Vietnam in recent years has reached about 14-16%, with a scale of about 40-42 billion USD/year, contributing 2-4% of the country’s GDP. There are about 4,000 enterprises operating in domestic and international freight transport. It is expected that by 2030, the demand for logistics human resources will be over 200,000 people. While the ability to meet the demand for logistics human resources is only about 10% of the market’s demand. The supply of labor for this service industry only meets about 40% of the demand for businesses. |
