WhatsApp’s ‘Last Seen at’ is a valuable feature of the instant messaging app. You can check when your friends or family members were last active on WhatsApp and send messages accordingly. But what if you no longer see the last time your contact was seen on WhatsApp? Here are the possible reasons.
While WhatsApp’s Last Seen feature is useful in specific cases, some people may abuse it and continue to see another contact’s Last Seen status. When people feel like being tracked on WhatsApp, they can use WhatsApp’s privacy options and disable Last Seen from their account.
There are several ways to hide Last Viewed on WhatsApp and your contact may have used one of the following tricks to hide the last active status from you.
1. Disabled person was last seen
WhatsApp allows you to completely disable last view on the platform. When your contacts use WhatsApp privacy add-on, you cannot see their last seen status. Otherwise, these contacts won’t be able to see your Last Viewed either. If you want the same setup for your WhatsApp account, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Open WhatsApp and go to Settings (iPhone users can tap the settings gear in the bottom right corner and Android users need to select the more menu in the top right corner to open the settings).
Step 2: Select Account.
Step 3: Open the Privacy menu.
Step 4: Select Last Viewed.
Step 5: Tap Nobody from the following menu.
WhatsApp will disable Last Seen for your account, and you can’t test the same feature for other contacts.
2. The person doesn’t save your number on their phone
For security reasons, most WhatsApp users only share their Last Seen status with contacts. If the person doesn’t have your mobile number saved on their phone, you won’t see their Last Seen status. You can ask the recipient to add your mobile number to their contact list. After the person adds you to the contact list, you can open the WhatsApp chat and select Last Viewed at the top.
Thanks to WhatsApp’s new privacy add-ons, you can now hide Last Viewed, profile pictures, and information about specific contacts. You can’t see Last Seen on WhatsApp when the person hides it from specific contacts, including you.

4. Enable last seen status on your WhatsApp account
When you turn off Last Seen on your WhatsApp account (check the first trick), you can’t check the same for other contacts. If you don’t see Last Seen in every WhatsApp conversation, you most likely have Last Viewed in WhatsApp turned off. Follow the steps below and give Last Seen status to your contacts.
Step 1: Open the Privacy menu in WhatsApp (refer to the steps above).
Step 2: Go to the Last Seen menu.
Step 3: Select My Contacts.
WhatsApp will enable Last Seen for your account and you can check the same for other contacts.
5. The person blocked you on WhatsApp
Your friends or family members might block you on WhatsApp when things go awry. You can’t check their profile picture, Last Viewed or About, and WhatsApp won’t send your messages and media files either. There is no specific way to know when someone on WhatsApp blocked you. You can do some of the tricks below and make an informed prediction about your status with a contact on WhatsApp.
- You can’t see that person’s profile picture
- You can’t see the last time of that person
- You can’t see WhatsApp contacts about the status
- Your text messages, media files, and voice clips won’t reach other people’s phones (you won’t see double check marks for them)
- You cannot add that person to any WhatsApp groups
If your WhatsApp contact meets all of the above criteria, that person has blocked you on the social network. You can contact via social networks like Telegram or Signal and sort out the differences.
