Michael Finley is an American former professional basketball player who currently serves the position as the Assistant General Manager/Vice President of Basketball Operations for the Dallas Mavericks of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Finley attended University of Wisconsin, Madison where he majored in Business Management. He played collegiate basketball, averaging 18.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. During his final season, he was drafted 1st round, 21st overall pick by the Phoenix Suns in the 1995 NBA draft.

Finley began his professional career with the Suns in a stellar, becoming the only third rookie in Suns history to score over 1000 points in a season. He finished his rookie season with 15 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game on average and was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team.

After just a year with the Suns, Finley was traded on December 26, 1996 to the Dallas Mavericks along with A. C. Green and Sam Cassell. His first season with the Mavericks was good, as he led the team in scoring, assists and steals. Finley became an integral part of the team’s offense and was selected to represent the Western Conference in the All-Star Game in 2000 and 2001.

Finley’s importance in the team dwindled and soon became a supporting player at the Mavericks. He was waived in 2005 and snapped up by the San Antonio Spurs although he had offers from Miami, Phoenix, Detroit and Minnesota.

Accordingly, he adjusted adequately to a secondary role as Manu Ginóbili’s backup. Finley imposed the Spurs record for three-point field goals in a playoff game, making eight of nine attempts, shadowing the previous record of Bruce Bowen in 2003. Finley eventually won the NBA Championship with the Spurs in 2007 in his 12th season in the NBA.

On March 6 2010, Finley signed for the Boston Celtics, which would be his last team and last season in the NBA. He helped the Celtics reach the NBA Finals, only to lose out to the Los Angeles Lakers who were defending champions at the time. He announced his retirement after that season.
